WINONA, MN – Michelle McDonald became the 14th player in Winona State history to reach 1,000 points in her career as the Warriors earned an emphatic 93-42 victory over Wisconsin-Platteville Saturday in McCown Gymnasium.
Needing just four points to hit the milestone entering the contest, McDonald hit on a pair of free throws with 3:13 to play in the first half to reach 1,000 points. The Warrior senior finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Winona State started fast jumping out to a 52-11 advantage at the half after allowing UW-Platteville to shoot just 27 percent in the opening stanza and 31 percent on the game. The Warrior defense also forced 27 Pioneer turnovers. Beth Alberson led the Warriors with five steals while Tessa Wells had four.
Becca Friestleben led all scorers with 17 points, connecting on five of seven 3-pointers. Michelle Tobin added 13 points while Abby Busch chipped in 12. Six Warriors finished the game in double figures scoring with Katie Wolff also adding ten.
Winona State shot 60 percent (38-of-63) from the floor for the game and connected on 11 of 19 attempts from behind the 3-point line. WSU handed out 27 assists on the night with Wolff leading the charge with six and Wells adding five.
Winona State (4-1 overall) will finish its non-conference schedule on Nov. 29 when it hosts Wisconsin-Stout at 6 pm.
