Mankato, Minn.— The Minnesota State soccer team beat St. Cloud State 1-0 in the NSIC/ US Bank Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship at the Pitch at Gage Towers in Mankato Sunday afternoon. The win gives MSU an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, which will be its sixth appearance in school history and first since 2009.
Junior forward Nicole Dooher- the NSIC/US Bank Tournament MVP- scored her 11th goal of the season at the 70:03 mark of the game to clinch the win. Fellow junior forward Brittany Henry gave her a ball 20 yards out from the top of the box as Dooher flew past the defender to beat SCSU goalkeeper Kenzie Hanzlik on her right side.
The Mavericks dominated the second half, rifling six of its 11 shots on goal in the final 45 minutes. MSU goalkeeper Molly McGough made two saves in the game, including a key save with ten minutes remaining in the game. McGough and the Mavericks have given up just nine goals this season, including 12 shutouts in the past 13 games.
Minnesota State (16-2-3) waits for the announcement of whom and where it will play in the first round of the NCAA tournament, which will be announced Monday at 6:30 p.m.
