SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No. 6 Augustana opened the 2011-12 dual season with a pair of wins Friday night in Sioux Falls, topping Dakota Wesleyan 40-0 and Northwestern (Iowa) 43-4.
The Vikings (2-0) used two wins by fall and another two by technical fall to top DWU (1-4). Five victories by major decision, one by fall and another by technical fall keyed Augustana's win over NC (3-2).
TJ North (125) and Jeff Nielsen (197) collected pins, while Nate Herda (149) and Carl Serck (184) each charted wins by technical fall against DWU.
North began the season-opening dual with his pin, terminating DWU's Zach Nelson in 4:58.
Cody Lensing (133) and Jason Jeremiason (141) followed with wins by decision, topping Richard Rios and Dusty Paulsen, respectively.
Marcus Edgington (157), Tom Davies (165) and Kale Merrell (174) stretched Augustana's advantage to 26-0 with wins by decision, and Serck and Nielsen made it 37-0 with their victories.
Mike Roberts closed the dual with a 3-2 victory over Eric Gruis in the heavyweight bout.
Wins by major decision doused the scorecard against NC.
North (125), Jeremiason (141), Herda (149), Edgington (157) and Nielsen (197) all notched victories by major decision.
Jeremiah Peterson won his 133-pound contest by technical fall over NC's Diego Quintana 20-5, and Davies pinned Isaac Ruiz in 2:21.
Augustana's only loss on the evening came at 174 pounds when NC's David Carter beat Merrell 14-4 (major decision).
The Red Raiders left 184 pounds and heavyweight open.
Augustana is off until Jan. 7 when the Vikings travel to Springfield, Ill., for the NWCA National Duals.
