California, Pa. -- Sophomore quarterback Phillip Klaphake (Princeton, Minn.) rushed for two touchdowns and threw for a third to lead the 13th-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies to a 26-3 season opening victory over 12th-ranked California University of Pennsylvania Thursday night at Adamson Stadium on the Cal U campus. Wayne, Neb. - No. 16 Nebraska-Kearney used numerous big plays, racking up 700 yards of total offense, to down Wayne State 41-20 in non-conference college football played Thursday evening in Wayne before a crowd of 3,413 at Cunningham Field. The game was also broadcast statewide on Nebraska Educational Television. The first series of the game saw WSC lose starting quarterback Cyle Schultz, who was knocked out for the rest of the game on the third play of the contest. Later in the quarter, the Wildcats opened the scoring as backup quarterback Evan Johnson found junior wide receiver Kevin Paulsen on a 10-yard scoring strike that capped a 10 play, 80-yard drive giving WSC a 7-0 lead with 8:22 to play in the first quarter. Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State opens its season with a win for the first time since 2005 as they defeated Southwest Minnesota State 30-17 in a non-conference NSIC football contest. Northern State used several big offensive plays and forced three Southwest Minnesota State turnovers to earn the wind. SMSU finished the game with 407 yards of offense and 22 first downs, but SMSU was just 3-of-5 inside the NSU 20-yard line in have its three-game winning streak over NSU snapped.Nick Wanner led NSU completing 10 of 12 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 32 yards.The NSU defense forced three interceptions on SMSU’s first three drives of the second half to build a 24-10 lead. Marquette, Mich. - Northern Michigan used a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and one with five minutes and 30 seconds remaining to break a 24-all tie and propel the Wildcats to a 31-24 victory over Minnesota State Thursday evening.
