Mavericks Capture Win with Early Scoring Surge

Denver, Colo.— Minnesota State (2-1-1) ended its road trip with a 3-2 win over Regis University Sunday. MSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead as it would be enough to fend-off the Rangers two goals in the last 12 minutes of the game.

Scoring the lone goal of the first half, MSU junior forward Brittany Henry scored her third goal of the season at 19:14 into the half. Henry’s shot was the only Maverick shot on goal in the half as the Rangers landed four on freshman goalkeeper Molly McGough.

Minnesota State’s Nicole Dooher gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead as she pushed it to the right past the keeper 11:19 into the second half. Junior midfielder Brianne West  tallied her third assist of the season on the Dooher goal.

Kari Becker, a MSU freshman forward, notched her first career goal for Minnesota State 23:03 into the second half as fellow freshman Ashley Harlan earned the assist. The Becker goal gave MSU a 3-0 cushion as six MSU freshman saw action in the 90 minutes match.

The Rangers didn’t give up as they fought until the buzzer sounded, scoring two goals in the final 12 minutes. Regis’ Rachel McMahon scored on a pass from Jordan Miller at the 34:10 mark into the second half. Ranger forward Meghan Stuart scored with just under five minutes remaining in the game as Marissa Davis was credited with the assist.

MSU was outshot 20-15 in the game as McGough made eight saves in the game for the Mavericks. The Regis goalkeeper, Ellen Augsburger, made one save in the game.

Minnesota State (2-1-1) returns to opens its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule Saturday as it heads to Concordia- St. Paul. The game is slated for 12 p.m.
