ST. PAUL, MN – Jump-started by a pair of freshmen, the Winona State soccer team closed its non-conference schedule with a 3-1 win over Concordia-St. Paul. Tied at one at the half after a goal from freshman Alaina Kne, the Warriors scored early in the second on a goal by Amanda Bergstedt to take a lead it would never give back.

The Warriors responded to the Golden Bear’s early first half goal with a goal of their own. Kne was able to control the ball at the top of the box and beat the CU goalkeeper to tie the score at one. The goal was the second of the season for the Warrior freshman. Melissa Sellier recorded an assist on the play, her second of the year.

Winona State took the lead 15 minutes into the second half, with Bergstedt picking up a loose ball and finding the back of the net. The goal put the Warriors up with a lead they would build on shortly.

Sellier added a third goal for the Warriors just ten minutes later, staking the team to a 3-1 lead. Sellier took a pass from Katy Soliday and rocketed a long shot into the net.

WSU outshot Concordia-St. Paul 19-12, with the Warriors putting nine of those shots on goal.

Winona State is 2-2-1 overall and will begin NSIC play Friday when it hosts Upper Iowa. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at Verizon Wireless Stadium.
