Warriors Earn 2-0 Win In NSIC Opener

WINONA, MN -- The Winona State soccer team pitched its first shutout of the season, beating Upper Iowa 2-0 in the team's NSIC opener. The win moves the Warriors to 3-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Winona State struck almost immediately, as Sarah Colleran scored just three minutes into the contest. Rebecca McCoy found Samantha Fegen in the middle of the field to begin the scoring play. Fegen slid a pass to Colleran who knocked home her first goal of the season.

The Warriors added a second goal midway through the second half, with Katy Soliday finding the back of the net. Soliday put in a shot from the corner of the box after she was found by Melissa Sellier with a pass.

WSU goalkeeper Anna Belpedio made five saves on the contest, setting a program mark for career saves in the process.

The Warriors outshot Upper Iowa 16-8 on the game, putting nine of those shots on goal.

Winona State will be in action at home next weekend, facing Minnesota Duluth on Saturday before hosting Bemidji State Sunday.
