WINONA, MN – Hosting the top team in the nation and the defending national champion, the No. 15 Winona State soccer team played Grand Valley State to a 1-1 double overtime tie.
After finding themselves on the defensive through much of the first half and the opening minutes of the second, Winona State began to find its offensive legs in the later stages of the contest.
Grand Valley State scored in the 62nd minute on a controversial goal. The WSU defense appeared to clear the ball before it crossed the into the goal, but it was ruled Grand Valley State had gotten the ball in and was given the score.
Winona State tied the game at one in the 74th minute, with Melissa Sellier finding the back of the net on a corner kick. Samantha Fegen lofted a beautiful corner kick in front of the net that Sellier headed in. That would prove to be the final goal of the game as both teams played the remainder of regulation and two overtimes scoreless.
Belpedio made ten saves on the contest as Grand Valley State recorded 27 total shots. Winona State had just eight shots on the night but was still able to knock in one score.
Winona State will be back on the field Sunday when it travels to take on St. Cloud State in a non-conference game. Kickoff is set for 3 pm in St. Cloud.
