Warriors Take Over First In NSIC With 76-63 Victory over MSUM

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Clayton Vette scored 24 points and the No. 13 Warriors outscored MSU Moorhead 16-7  in the final 6:49 to pull away for a 76-63 victory Saturday in Moorhead.

The victory gives the Warriors sole possession of first place in the NSIC with a 10-1 league record after entering the game tied atop the standings with the No. 16 Dragons. Winona State is 15-2 overall on the year and has won four straight.

Vette reached 20 points for the second consecutive evening after scoring 26 Friday against Minnesota, Crookston. The WSU junior was 8-of-15 from the field and hit 7-of-8 free throws while also corralling eight rebounds. 

Winona State led by two at the half and waged a back-and-fourth battle with the Dragons in the first ten minutes of the second period. The teams were tied on six different occasions in the opening ten minutes of the second before pulling away.

Xavier Humphrey scored 13 while Grant Johnson and Taylor Cameron each scored ten for WSU. The Warriors did damage from the free throw line, hitting 23-of-29 shots (79.3%) from the charity stripe.

Winona State committed a season-low four turnovers in the win.

The Warriors will return home next weekend to host Wayne State and Augustana in McCown Gymnasium.
