WINONA, Minn. – Winona State shot 69 percent as a team and four players scored in double figures as the No. 6 Winona State men’s basketball team used a strong second half to beat Minnesota State 85-63 Friday in Winona.
The Warriors were 30-of-43 from the floor (69.8 percent) on the game and shot 54.5 percent from behind the 3-point line. The team outscored Minnesota State by 18 in the second half to cruise to the 22 point victory. The final score is the largest margin of victory for the Warriors since they beat Upper Iowa by 27 on Dec. 3.
Clayton Vette scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half while also pulling down seven rebounds. Jon Walburg came off the bench to score 18 while CJ Erickson had 12 and Xavier Humphrey 11.
The Warriors held a four point advantage at the half before going on a 12-4 run in the first four and a half minutes of the second half to push the lead into double figures. Walburg hit a three with 11:25 to play that put WSU up by 12 and the team would hold a double-digit advantage for the rest of the game.
Winona State committed just one turnover in the second half.
WSU is now 18-2 overall and 13-1 in the NSIC. The Warriors will host Southwest Minnesota State at 7 pm Saturday.
