Northern State Upsets #10 Winona State on Buzzer Beater

ABERDEEN, SD – After blowing a six point lead with 53 seconds left and trailing by one Northern State's Geoffrey Firmin hit a 3-pointer with one second remaining, spoiling #10 Winona State’s comeback bid and giving Northern State a 60-58 victory Tuesday in Aberdeen. The loss snaps a ten game winning streak for the Warriors. 

Down six with 53 seconds to play, the No. 10 Warriors came storming back to tie the game at 57 with four seconds remaining. Grant Johnson converted a layup and then his first free throw after a Kellen Taylor steal to pull WSU within three, 57-54, with 27 seconds to play. Johnson missed his second foul shot but CJ Erickson collected the offensive rebound and Xavier Humphrey buried a trey to tie the game.

Erickson was fouled grabbing a rebound on the other end of the floor with four seconds to play and hit one of two free throws, putting the Warriors up 58-57 before Firmin hit his buzzer-beater.

Northern State was led by Dustin Tetzlaff's 16 points.  Collin Pryor added 11 and Firmin had ten in the win.

The game was a defensive slugfest that saw the Warriors shoot 37.7 percent from the field and the teams to combine to go 6-of-29 from behind the 3-point line.

Northern State held a two point advantage at the half but the Warriors were able to take a lead five minutes into the second on a Clayton Vette jumper. The Warriors extended their advantage to three on two different occasions but could not push the lead any further.

The game was tied five different times in the final nine minutes before the fireworks of the contest’s final minute.

Vette led the Warriors with 14 points while Humphrey and Zander Culver each added nine. Erickson had a team-high eight rebounds as the Warriors fall to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in NSIC play. NSU improves to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC.
