Lucas Munkelwitz went undefeated in three matches to help guide the No. 3 Huskies to a first place finish at the 2012 NWCA Division II Duals on Jan. 7-8 in Springfield, Ill. Munkelwitz opened his weekend in Illinois with a solid 9-0 major decision over Jarrett Edison in the Huskies’ 29-10 win over No. 7 Central Oklahoma. Munkelwitz continued the tournament in the semi-finals with a huge 6-2 victory over No. 1 ranked Carl Broghammer of Upper Iowa. Munkelwitz’ victory helped the Huskies gain a 22-13 win over the No. 2 ranked Peacocks. In the championship match, Munkelwitz charted a 6-0 victory over John Reed at 197-pounds adding to the 23-12 win over No. 1 ranked Newberry College (S.C.).


NSIC Wrestling Notes

AUGUSTANA COLLEGE
Carl Serck (174, Sr., Hudson, S.D./Alcster Hudson HS) went 5-0 this past weekend at the NWCA National Duals, helping No. 6 Augustana to a fifth-place finish. Serck won four matches by decision and one by major decision. His major-decision victory came against Limestone’s Bryce Sopko (14-6). Augustana earned wins over Findlay (Ohio), Northern State, Limestone College and Central Oklahoma at the National Duals.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY
Currently on break, the Marauders return to the mat when U-Mary hosts St. Cloud State on January 14 and Upper Iowa on January 15 to open Northern Sun competition. Off to a tremendous start on the season, the University of Mary is earning points in the national poll. Several Marauders have won individual honors at dual meets. Soph. Trevor Johnson (141) has placed in all five tournaments he has competed in. Brady Anderson (184)and Martin Patron (285) have placed in three tournaments. Additionally, Collin Engelhardt (157), Hunter Menendez (125) and Brock Krumm (157) all placed in their final outing of 2011 at the Dragon Open.

MINNESOTA STATE
Cody Quinn (165 lbs, Fr., Covington, Wash.) completed a perfect weekend at the Cliff Keen NWCA National Duals. Quinn went 3-0 on the day including two major decision wins and a fall. Quinn opened the duals in dominating fashion with major decision wins over Patrick Spano (King College) 14-0 and Todd Brier (Central Missouri) 14-3. Quinn completed his undefeated day by pinning Motrail Johnson (UW-Parkside) at 4:37. Quinn is now 12-2 on the season.
Minnesota State finished 1-2 last weekend at the Cliff Keen NWCA National Duals...MSU opened the duals with an 18-14 defeat to King College...MSU bounced back to defeat Central Missouri 35-6 in the consolation round...MSU then fell to UW-Parkside 23-18 in the second consolation round...Sophomore 125-lb David Demo (Bozeman, Mont.), junior 149-lb Jesse Westphal (Janesville, Minn), Senior 157-lb Tel Todd (Bozeman, Mont.) and freshman Cody Quinn (Covington, Wash.) all finished 3-0 at the national duals...MSU will next be in competition at the Ranger Duals on January 21.

MSU MOORHEAD
The Dragons dual action will start on Jan. 11 at Dickinson State.

NORTHERN STATE
Matt Meuleners (285, Jr., Young America, Minn./Central HS) won all three of his matches at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Saturday, helping the Wolves to a 1-2 record and their first ever team win at the prestigious tournament. Meuleners, the returning national champion and second ranked wrestler in the nation, earned a major decision victory over Central Oklahoma’s Cody Dauphin, followed by a first-period pin of Truman State’s Joel Geders that capped the Wolves’ 39-12 victory over the Bulldogs. The junior then picked up a win by forfeit in the Wolves’ final match of the day, a 15-25 loss to sixth-ranked Augustana.

SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
Southwest Minnesota State was idle last week. The Mustangs will pick up action on Jan. 11 hosting Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) and Waldorf (Iowa) in a triangular meet beginning at 4 p.m. at the PE Gym in Marshall.

ST. CLOUD STATE

SCSU completed the NWCA DII Duals with a 23-12 win over #1 ranked Newberry. In the last two weekends on the mats, Munkelwitz owns a 6-0 record that includes wins over #18 Colorado Mesa, #5 Grand Canyon, #1 Newberry, #7 Central Oklahoma and #2 Upper Iowa.
This marked the Huskies’ first-ever team title at the NWCA Division II National Duals. Last year, SCSU placed third at the NWCA Division II National Duals and they also placed second at the 2011 NCAA Division II championships…SCSU now owns a perfect 11-0 record in dual match action this season and the Huskies will open the NSIC season on Jan. 13 with a match at Northern State and on Jan. 14 with a match at Mary…SCSU opened the NWCA DII Duals with a 47-6 victory over Truman State…SCSU senior Tad Merritt was 4-0 in action at the NWCA Duals with three matches at 165-pounds and one match at 174-pounds…Junior Jake Kahnke was 4-0 at the DII Duals with a pair of pins and two major victories to his credit along the way. A highlight for Kahnke was a 19-8 major win over #4 Jake Elkins of Newberry…Merritt also earned a win over #5 Sean Brynes of Newberry…Derek Skala gained big wins at the DII Duals over #1 ranked Mitch Schultz of Upper Iowa and #6 ranked Mitch Brown of Newberry.

UPPER IOWA
The #2 Peacocks ended their run at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Springfield, Ill. on Sunday with a third place finish, their best-ever finish at the National Duals. After defeating Limestone (27-12) and #11 Wisconsin-Parkside (27-16) on Saturday, Upper Iowa lost their semifinal match on day two to #3 St. Cloud State, 22-13, but rebounded with a nine-point victory, 24-15, over #4 Nebraska-Kearney in the third place match. UIU held a 13-6 lead through the 165 pound match against SCSU, but the Huskies won the final four matches to claim the win. The Peacocks trailed 15-6 after the 165 pound match against the Lopers, but four straight wins gave them the third place trophy.
Trevor Franklin went 4-0 at 133 pounds, while Kyle Pedretti went 3-0 at 125 pounds. Blake Sorensen (165) and Mitch Schultz (184) each went 3-1 on the weekend, while Jordan Rinken (149), Winston Robbins (157), Wade Gobin (174), Carl Broghammer (197) and Luke Stika (285) all won two matches. Chris Paulus won his only match of the weekend.
Upper Iowa (4-1) will now enter the Northern Sun Conference season with a pair of road duals this weekend. The Peacocks will travel to Northern State on Saturday at 4 p.m. and U-Mary on Sunday at 2 p.m.
