WAYNE, Neb. - Despite committing 42 errors, The No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team triumphed over No. 16 Wayne State 3-1 on Thursday night. SMSU earned the match with set victories of 27-25, 25-22, 16-25, 26-24. With the victory, SMSU improves to 24-1 overall, 16-1 in NSIC play while the Wildcats drop to 19-8 overall, 11-6 in NSIC play.
The victory was the first time SMSU had defeated Wayne State on the road since 2008, and only the second time since 2003.
Senior outside hitter, Brooke Burmeister recorded her third straight double-double as she led the Mustangs with a match-high 17 kills and 20 digs. Emilee Gutzmer also recorded a double-double in the match as the setter recorded 11 digs to go with her 52 assists. Devin Diedrich and Mary Groth posted double-digit kill totals for the Mustangs as Diedrich pounded 14 and Groth added 12.
Rachel Westby posted 20 digs as she returned to the lineup after missing the last two games due to injury. Mckell Anderson added 13 digs of her own.
SMSU committed a season-high 42 errors in the match but managed to pick-up a key conference and region win.
Wayne State managed to slow down the Mustang attack with 16 blocks and forced a Mustang season-low .097 hitting percentage.
Cori Hobbs led WSC with 15 kills, while Alex Arms added 14.
SMSU will welcome Augustana to the PE GYM this Saturday at 4 p.m. as the Mustangs will close-out the regular season with three home games.
