Shamus O’Grady won the top spot in the 184-pound bracket at the 2012 Iowa State Harold Nichols Cyclone Open on Nov. 10.  O’Grady scored a perfect 4-0 record at the tournament, which opened the year for the Huskies.  A three-time All-American, O’Grady won the title with a 6-3 decision over Jeff Koepke of Division I rival University of Illinois.  On the way to the title, O’Grady started his day with an 18-3 tech fall win over unattached Jahusa Marsh.  In the quarterfinals, O’Grady charted a 10-2 major decision win over returning All-American Mark Fiala of #1 ranked Nebraska-Kearney.  In the semi’s, O’Grady scored a huge 11-6 victory over the University of Illinois’ Tony Dallago, who entered the meet ranked ninth in the nation at the NCAA Division I level.

Augustana - TJ North (125, RFr., Elk Point, S.D./Vermillion) took the 125-pound championship at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday afternoon. North picked up a major decision and a pin en route the championship earning the title with a 7-2 decision over Bryden Lazaro of Dakota State. North earned a second place finish at the Daktronics Open last weekend where he won two bouts over Division I opponents.
Jeremiah Peterson (133, So., Canton, S.D./Canton) won the 133-pound title at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday afternoon. Peterson breezed through the opening rounds starting with a pin over Tom Ostapowich. He then earned a 5-0 decision before getting into the championship with a pin over Alex Rust of Morningside. Peterson finished off the title with a 3-1 decision over Richard Rios of Dakota Wesleyan.
Bradyn Neises (165, So., Howard, S.D./Howard) earned the 165-pound championship at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday. After an opening round bye, Neises won a 5-3 decision over Malcolm Johnson of Morningside before earning an 11-7 decision over Northern State’s Blake Lungren. He finished off the day with an 8-6 decision over Chade Morehead of Morningside in the championship bout.  

U-Mary - Trevor Johnson (149, Jr., Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck), ranked fifth in the nation, won five straight matches to claim third place at the Bison Open. After losing his opening match of the day to Thomas Giaimo of the University of Minnesota, Johnson was dropped into the lower bracket. Competing at 149 pounds, the U-Mary All-American destroyed his next three opponents, claiming technical fall wins by scores of 18-2, 19-4 and 18-1. To earn a spot in the third-place match, the Bismarck, ND, native defeated Zane Zeman, wrestling unattached for Minnesota, 5-0. Johnson claimed third with a narrow 5-3 win over Jared Donar, also competing unattached from the University of Minnesota.
Engelhardt won three straight matches on his way to sixth place at 165. After opening with a loss, the U-Mary senior pinned Riley Prentice of Minnesota (unattached) to set up a meeting with teammate Brock Krumm (165, So., Bismarck, N.D./St. Mary’s). The two Bismarck, ND, natives went into overtime with Engelhardt pulling out a 2-1 win. Engel would win once more before dropping his next two matches and finishing 3-3 on the day. The Marauders return to competition at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open in Moorhead, MN, on November 17.

Minnesota State - Drew Lexvold (141lbs, So., Kenyon, Minn.) went a perfect 4-0 on the week. The Kenyon, Minn. native won the Luther College Open after going 3-0. Lexvold opened the tournament pinning both Ray Feliz-Taveras (Cornell College) and Matt Paulus (Upper Iowa) before defeating Thomas Mirocha (Wartburg) 3-2 to claim the title. Lexvold also recorded Minnesota State’s lone pin in its 33-6 win over Waldorf on Thursday as he pinned Dillon Spates at 1:40.
Minnesota State defeated Waldorf College 33-6 in its 2012-13 debut. Sophomore Drew Lexvold (141 lbs) recorded the lone pin for the Mavericks as he pinned Dillon Spates at 1:40. Thomas Allen (149 lbs), Cody Quinn (165 lbs) and Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs) all won via tech falls over the Warriors.
MSU claimed three individual titles at the Luther College Open, while also boasting four runner-up performances. Freshman Alphonso Vruno (141 lbs), Lexvold (141 lbs) and senior Aaron Norgren (184 lbs) all won their individual weight class. Junior David Demo (125 lbs), Quinn (165 lbs), Eichmann (174 lbs) and junior Corby Running (285 lbs) each lost in their title bout. MSU will compete this weekend at the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg College.

MSU Moorhead - Gerad Fugleberg (HWT, So., Fargo, N.D. / Fargo South HS) had a solid opening day for the Dragons at the Bison Open on Saturday, going 3-2 to finish fifth. A highlight of the day was a 9-2 win over Division I foe John Gusewelle in the fifth-place match.

Minot State - Minot State began its third season since being reinstated as a varsity sport by participating in the NDSU Bison Open Saturday. The Beavers top finisher was Matt Fetterley (174, Jr., Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths Puffer High School / Muskegon Community College), who won his final four matches to finish third. He lost his first round match to eventual champion Logan Storley of Minnesota and finished with a pin of Connor Munk, unattached, for third place. MISU’s Cody Carpenter (141, Jr., Muskegon, Mich. / Muskegon High School / Muskegon Community College) and Josh Andrew (125/133, Fr., Richland, Wash. / Richland High School) both won first-round matches.

Northern State - Two-time defending national champion Matt Meuleners (HWT, Sr., Young America, Minn./Central HS)  began his NCAA title defense in strong fashion on Saturday, finishing second at the NDSU Bison Open.  Meuleners, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at the heavyweight division, reached the championship bout following a pin, a major decision and a 5-2 win over Michael Kroalis, an unattached freshman from the University of Minnesota.  In the championship, he faced the NCAA Division I national champion from a season ago in Anthony Nelson of the U of M, falling in a tightly contested 3-2 decision.

Southwest Minnesota State - Justin Reinsma (Jr., 133, Slayton, Minn. / Murray County Central)  went 3-1 to place third at the Bison Open hosted by North Dakota State University this weekend. Justin Reinsma would begin the tournament with a pin over Hunter Menendez (Mary) just 1:39 into the bout and a 8-5 decision over Javier Portillo (MSUM, unattached) in the quarterfinal match. Reinsma’s only loss of the day came in the semifinal bout as Justin Scherkenback (NDSU) won by a 3-0 decision. Reinsma would rebound with a 6-1 decision over Tyler Tischer (MSUM, unattached) in the consolation semifinals and would secure his third place finish with a 6-4 win over the University of Minnesota’s Randy Hanson.

Clint Poster (157lbs, R-Fr., Pierz, Minn.) made an impressive debt in 2012-13 with a first place finish in the 157-pound bracket at the Cyclone Open on Nov. 10.  Poster gained a 5-0 record in tournament action, which was highlighted by four pins on the way to the title.  In the championship bout, Poster gained a pin at 6:52 over Edwin Cooper, an unattached wrestler from Ellsworth.  To start the day, Poster pinned Bryce Robbins of Waldorf and then pinned Trent Weatherman of DI rival Iowa State.  In the quarters, Poster added a pin against Batchulu Zulkhuu of Lindenwood and also earned a 7-3 decision win over Nebraska-Kearney’s Chase White in the semi’s.
The St. Cloud State wrestling team, ranked #2 in the nation, opened its 2012-13 season on Nov. 10 with a trip to the annual Harold Nichols Cyclone Open at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  This tournament featured over 250 athletes from many of the nation’s top programs at the NCAA I, II, III and NAIA levels.  The Huskies sent a full contingent of wrestlers to the tournament, which was SCSU’s first official competition of the new season.  At the Cyclone Open, St. Cloud State brought home two weight class titles from the tournament that had no team scores.  Three-time All-American Shamus O’Grady won the title at 184-pounds and redshirt freshman Clint Poster was the tournament champ at 157-pounds.  O’Grady won the title with a perfect 4-0 record.  In the title bout, O’Grady win top honors with a 6-3 victory over Jeff Koepke of Division I rival University of Illinois.  He also charted a 10-2 major decision win over Mark Fiala of Nebraska Kearney in the quarterfinals and an 11-6 win over Tony Dallago of Illinois in the semi’s.  At 157-pounds, Poster was a one-man wrecking crew with a 5-0 record that included four pins.  In the championship match Poster capped the day with a pin at 6:52 over unattached Edwin Cooper.  He also had pins against Iowa State’s Trent Weatherman, Batchulu Zulkhuu of Lindenwood and Waldorf’s Bryce Robbins.  Of note, SCSU’s Eric Forde placed fifth at 125 at the Cyclone Open and Jay Hildreth placed fourth at 141.  SCSU will continue its season on Nov. 17 with a trip to the Finn Griniker Open in Moorhead, Minn.  

Upper Iowa  - Bryce Lumzy (157, Sr., Dixon, Ill.) went 4-0 at the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa on Saturday.  The Peacock senior won his first match by decision over Scott Hogan of Wisconsin-La Crosse, before pinning Cory Stratton of Simpson College in the quarterfinals.  Lumzy squared off against Sawyer Hoffman of Minnesota State in the semis and the Peacock grappler came out with an impressive 8-0 major decision.  Lumzy finished his day in the finals with a win by fall over Jacob Bohler of St. Olaf.  Both pins came just after the two minute mark in the match.
The #7 Peacock wrestling team returned to the mats today in northeast Iowa.  Upper Iowa claimed 17 placewinners including four champions, three runner ups and five third place finishers.  In total 26 wrestlers made their way to Decorah for the open including one-third of that total as unattached competitors.  Upper Iowa was led by 197-pounder Carl Broghammer, who remained undefeated this year posting four more wins and claiming a second straight open title.  Bryce Lumzy (157) and Jordan Rinken (149) joined Broghammer at the top of their respective weight classes in the Elite Brackets, while Colbey Vance claimed the Freshman Bracket title at 165 pounds.
Broghammer went 3-0 with two wins by fall and a major decision, while Lumzy went 4-0 with a win by decision, a major decision and two wins by fall.  Rinken also went 4-0 with a win by technical fall and three decisions.  Vance’s day began with a flurry as he recorded two wins by fall and then a four-point decision in the final to go 3-0 after a first round bye.
Lincoln Monroe (Fresh. 125), Jeremy Brazil (Fresh 285) and Mitch Schultz (Elite 184) all placed as the runner up in their respective weight classes, while five Peacocks claimed third place finishes.   The Peacocks will continue their run of open tournaments this Saturday, Nov. 17, when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn.  Upper Iowa will compete in the Brute/Adidas Open hosted by Augsburg.  The tournament will once again be split up into two sets of brackets... the Gold Brackets for upperclassmen and the Silver Brackets for freshmen.
