Bryce Lumzy won the 157-pound title at a second straight tournament thanks to a 4-0 day at the Auggie-Brute Open hosted by Division III power Augsburg College. Lumzy won his first three matches by fall (1:43, 2:00, 4:00) to earn his shot at a second straight title. The senior from Dixon, Ill. then dominated his finals match against Chris Stevermer of St. Johns winning by major decision 8-0. On the season, Lumzy is 11-1 with 7 wins by fall and a pair of major decisions. His lone loss came by a 5-3 decision in the opening tournament.

Augustana - Nate Herda (149 lbs., Sr., Rock Rapids, Iowa/ Rock Rapids H.S.) earned a second-place finish in the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open this past weekend. Herda advanced past the first round by defeating a Division I wrestler from University of Wyoming by a 12-3 decision then to the third round, by a 7-3 decision over a wrestler from Adams State. Matched up with another Division I wrestler from Wyoming, Herda advanced to the 149-pound class finals with a 4-1 decision. A United State Air Force Academy wrestler was too much for Herda in the finals. Herda was pinned in 2:56, but still took home a second place finish.
U-Mary - Five University of Mary grapplers placed at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open on Saturday. All-American Trevor Johnson (Jr., Bismarck, ND) and Landon Della Silva (Sr., Corvallis, MT) both claimed fifth place at 149 in the Gold division. Brock Krumm (So., Bismarck, ND) finished fifth at 165 in the Gold division. At 197, Brady Anderson (Sr., Hamilton, MT) also garnered fifth. In the Maroon division at 149, Jayden placed fifth… The Marauders next compete in the Dragon Open at MSU Moorhead on December 1.
Minnesota State - Minnesota State was idle this weekend. MSU will next be in competition on 11/29 as it hosts Newman University.
MSU Moorhead - Jesse Munos (R-Fr., 174 pounds St. Paul, Minn. / South St. Paul HS) went 3-1 on the weekend to lead the MSUM wrestling team. In a 33-9 dual win over Dickinson State on Nov. 16, Munos recorded a win by fall over DSU’s Chris Brusato at 174 pounds to help the Dragons build an insurmountable 24-6 lead. A day later, he finished second in the 174-pound young division at the Linn Grinaker Open hosted by Concordia-Moorhead. He won his first match by fall in 56 seconds and then beat St. Cloud State’s Clayton Jennissen, 3-1 in overtime to reach the finals. In the championship match, he was injured just 23 seconds into the competition and had to default. Munos is 4-3 on the season.
Sophomore Gerad Fugleberg beat Dickinson State’s Brian Klevies, 2-0 at heavyweight in the Dragons’ dual win over Dickinson State. A day later, he lost his first match at heavyweight but came back to finish fifth, thanks to three straight wins by fall. Fugleberg leads the Dragons with a 7-3 record this season.
Minot State - Minot State was idle last week. MISU will next be in competition on 11/29 as it hosts University of Regina.
Northern State - Down 16-10 heading into the final three matches of the night, the Northern State wrestling program reeled off three straight pins - including a 19-second victory by Baker Haar at 197 pounds - to snatch a 28-16 win over the visiting Jamestown College Jimmies Wednesday night in Wachs Arena. The Wolves opened the night with the lead after a tight 1-0 win by Anthony Bruno at 125 pounds. From there, it was a back and forth battle with a win by fall at 141 pounds by Jamestown’s Dillon Kifer marking the distance after the first seven bouts of the night. That, however, is when the tide turned in favor of the Wolves. Senior Chad Gibson pinned his man with 11 seconds left in the second period of the 184-pound match to tie the match up at 16-all. Haar needed all of 19 seconds to take his man to the mat at 197 pounds before top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Matt Meuleners capped the night with a pin less than 90 seconds into his match.
NSU returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the MSU Moorhead Open and will resume dual meet action on Dec. 5 at Dakota Wesleyan.

Southwest Minnesota State - Justin Reinsma (Jr., 133, Slayton, Minn. / Murray County Central) placed fifth in the 133 pound Gold Division at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open. Reinsma would be edged by Philippe Walker (MSUM) in the opening round by a 4-3 decision but would rebound by taking his next two matches. Reinsma received a bye in the second round but followed with decisions over Matt Chambers (Dickinson State) and Jake Kostik (Concordia-Moorhead) to take the fifth place title.
SMSU will be off this weekend for Thanksgiving but will prepare for its dual of the season as the Mustangs will return to Moorhead, Minn. to take on Concordia-Moorhead on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
St. Cloud State - Caleb White (R-Fr., 285 lbs, Neola, Iowa / Tri-Center HS) charted a first place finish at 285-pounds at the 2012 Finn Grinaker Cobber Open in the Maroon Division on Nov. 17 in Moorhead. White opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Dominic Platow. In the semifinals, White added a pin at 1:50 against Mike Dyer of Itasca C.C. In the championshio match, White scored a 4-0 victory over Zane Petersen of Ridgewater College. White finished the event with a 3-0 record.
The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team enjoyed another solid weekend of tournament action on Nov. 17. The Huskies competed at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open, which was hosted by Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. The tournament featured several of the top college wrestlers in the upper midwest, and it included a Gold Division and Maroon Division. Sophomore Eric Forde, who hails from Fargo, N.D., captured second place in the Gold Division with a 2-1 overall record that included a 13-6 loss to Dylan Peters of Division I rival Northern Iowa in the championship bout at 125-pounds. At 141-pounds, SCSU’s Jay Hildreth also captured second place at the Cobber Open with a 3-1 record. In the title bout, Hildreth dropped an 8-2 decision against DI rival Joey Lazor of UNI. At 149-pounds, SCSU’s Josh Howk enjoyed a strong performance at the Open with a third place finish. SCSU’s Clint Poster placed third at 157-pounds that was capped by a 4-2 victory in the third place match over Pat Smith. Poster charted a 3-1 record at the Open. Senior Shamus O’Grady continued his strong start with a second place finish at 184-pounds. He gained two pins and a tech fall on the way to the finals. In the title bout, O’Grady lost a close 8-5 match against Brett Pfarr of DI rival Minnesota. To cap the action in the Gold Division Open, SCSU’s Chris Brassell gained a second place finish at 197-pounds. SCSU will continue its season on Dec. 8 when the Huskies host the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open in Halenbeck Hall. Action starts up at 9 a.m. and tickets may be purchased at the gate.

Upper Iowa, the #7 wrestling team in the country, continued their early season success at a third straight open tournament this past Saturday. The Peacocks won the title in six gold bracket (upperclassmen) brackets including a shared title between two UIU wrestlers at 165 pounds and added a title in the silver brackets (freshman) as well. UIU placed sixteen of the twenty-five wrestlers that attended the tournament. Mitch Funk (125), Matt Paulus (141), Jordan Rinken (149), Bryce Lumzy (157) and Carl Broghammer (197) all claimed individual titles in the gold brackets while Wade Gobin and Colbey Vance shared the title at 165 pounds after both winning their semifinal matches. Dalton Westerlund earned the lone silver bracket title at 174 pounds. For Broghammer, the title was his third straight open title and the redshirt junior as dominant winning all three matches by fall; he is now 10-0 on the season. Lumzy, Rinken and Vance all won their second straight open title, while Gobin, Funk, Paulus and Westerlund all earned their first title of the season.
