Carl Broghammer led the Peacocks with a perfect 4-0 record at the Loras Open last week. Wins included a pair of major decisions and a technical fall at 197 pounds.  His championship match was a 4-2 decision over Alex Coolidge of Cornell College.

NSIC Wrestling Notes
Augustana - TJ North (125, RFR., Elk Point, S.D.) finished second overall at 125 pounds at the Daktronics Open on Sunday. North picked up two wins over NCAA Division I opponents before falling in the championship to Tim Lambert of Nebraska. The redshirt freshman opened the day with back-to-back decisions before earning an 11-1 major decision over Jordan Bremer, competing unattached for the University of Minnesota. North followed that with a 6-1decision over North Dakota State’s Devin Wolf earning a trip to thechampionship bout.
Nate Herda (149, Sr., Rock Rapids, Iowa) finished in second-place in the 149-pound bracket at the Daktronics Open on Sunday. Herda finished the day with a 4-1 record after dropping the championship match in an11-6 decision to Nebraska’s Jake Sueflohn. After a first-round bye, Herda won amajor decision followed by two straight decisions, including a 6-4 decision over Conrad Ragnell who was competing unattached for the University ofMinnesota.
Sean Derry (197, Jr., Omaha, Neb.) went 4-1 at the Daktronics Open on Sunday earning second-place in the 197-pound weight class.After a first round bye, Derry picked up a 5-2 decision over Brady Anderson ofthe University of Mary. Derry moved into the championship bout with a 14-6major decision over Kolton Kersten before losing the championship match in a6-4 decision to North Dakota State’s Kallen Kleinschmidt.

U-Mary - U-Mary, which received votes in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association preseason poll after placing 19th in the nation last year, opened the season at the Warren Williamson / Daktronics Open. All-American Trevor Johnson finished fifth for U-Mary at 149, winning three of five matches. Brock Krumm also went 3-2 at 165. The Marauders next compete at the Bison Open on November 10.

Minnesota State - Minnesota State wrestling team received 43 points in the initial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll as announced by conference officials Friday afternoon. Upper Iowa is picked as the preseason favorite, as they garnered 64 points followed by St. Cloud State with 51 points. MSU has three wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the coaches’ poll. Junior David Demo (125 lbs) and sophomore Cody Quinn (165 lbs) are each favorites in their respective weight class entering the 2012-13 season. Demo and Quinn each placed seventh at the NCAA Championship en route to All-American honors. Demo recorded a 28-13 record last season, while Quinn finished 23-10.

MSU Moorhead - Senior Jacob Bennett headlines the returners for the MSU Moorhead wrestling team. Bennett won 20 matches a year ago and earned All-NSIC second-team honors. He placed second in the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 tournament at 157 pounds and advanced to the national championships.  MSUM and Head Coach Kris Nelson will count on several newcomers to push for mat time in 2012-13.

Minot State - Minot State begins its first season as a member of the NSIC and its first season as a full member of the NCAA Division II. Last year, the Beavers wrestled as an NCAA Division II independent, competing in the NCWA National Tournament. Minot State returns eight wrestlers who have competed at a national championship for the third-year reinstated program either in last year’s NCWA tournament or at the NAIA level. Leading the way is sophomore Marcus Polak (165, So., Minot, N.D. / Minot High School) (wrestled last year as Marcus Bausman). Bausman finished 29-7 last season, scoring 43 points, while picking up nine falls and two technical falls.

Northern State - Two-time defending national champion Matt Meuleners (HWT, Sr., Young America, Minn./Central HS) returns for his senior season in 2012-13.  A three-time All-American, Meuleners was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Year last season before going on to become NSU’s first two-time national champion at the NCAA Division II level.  He defeated St. Cloud State’s Jake Kahnke in the title match for a second straight time and became the tenth member of NSU’s 100-career win club.

Southwest Minnesota State - Justin Reinsma (Jr., 133, Slayton, Minn. / Murray County Central) is coming off a sophomore season in which he recorded a 23-15 record at 133 pounds for the Mustangs. 15 wins came by decision, while one came via pin. Reinsma was an All-American selection and was named to the All-NSIC second team. Reinsma would go on to qaulify for the NCAA II Championships and finished 3-2 to take seventh place. He was the first Mustang wrestler to earn All-America and All-NSIC honors since 2006. To cap off his successful sophomore year, the National Wrestling Coaches Association selected Reinsma to the Division II All-Academic team.

St. CLoud State -  St. Cloud State received a number two ranking in the 2012 Division II Wrestling Coaches national preseason poll and the Huskies have gained the runner-up position at both the 2012 and 2011 NCAA Division II championships.  Last year, SCSU won the NSIC title, the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 championship and the NWCA Division II National Duals championship under the direction of head coach Steve Costanzo, who begins his seventh season with the Huskies in 2012-13.  The Huskies kicked off the 2012-13 season with their annual Black/Red Classic intra-squad scrimmage on Nov. 2.  Former Husky national champ John Sundgren and former SCSU coach Bob Boeck served as honorary coaches for the Black/Red Classic this year.  The Huskies will return two three-time All-Americans to the wrestling room in 2012-13 and this duo includes senior 285-pounder Jake Kahnke and senior 184-pounder Shamus O’Grady.  Kahnke has finished as the NCAA Division II  runner-up at 285-pounds over the past two seasons for SCSU.  SCSU head coach Steve Costanzo owns a 79-23 career record at SCSU and last year the Huskies set a team record with a perfect 21-0 dual mark.  He is assisted this season by former Minnesota State wrestling standout Brady Wilson and graduate assistant Tyson Reiner.  Of note, SCSU’s Jake Kahnke owns a 95-12 career record during his career at SCSU.  The current team record of 144 career wins was set by Tad Merritt in 2011-12.  SCSU will open the 2012-13 season on Nov. 10 with a trip to the Harold Nichols Open in Ames, Iowa.  SCSU fans should mark Dec. 8 on their calendars for the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open in Halenbeck Hall.  This meet attracts many of the top collegiate wrestlers and programs from the upper midwest.  For complete ticket information on any SCSU home meet in 2012-13, please visit www.scsutickets.com

Upper IOwa  - The #7 Peacocks were in action with several wrestlers on the mat.  The tournament featured some great talent from all levels of collegiate wrestling and included over 350 wrestlers.  Eighteen Peacocks placed in one of twenty brackets split between two divisions.  The Gold Brackets were reserved for upperclassmen, while the Silver Brackets were for freshman only.
Carl Broghammer led the Peacocks on the day with a perfect 4-0 day that included a pair of major decisions and a technical fall at 197 pounds.  Jordan Rinken, Blake Sorensen and Mitch Schultz all finished as runner-ups in the gold brackets, while Colbey Vance, Dalton Westerlund and Jeremy Brazil all were runner-ups in the silver brackets.
