Mankato, Minn. -- The new-look Mavericks took to the mat for the first time Thursday night as they defeated Waldorf 33-6. Of the eight matches it won, Minnesota State recorded a fall and three tech falls en route to the victory. Sophomore Drew Lexvold (141 lbs) set the tone early for MSU by pinning Dillon Spates at 1:40. Lexvold was trailing 0-2 after a Spates takedown at 0:45 before escaping at 0:52, and recording a takedown at 1:30 that eventually led to the fall.

Returning All-American David Demo (125 lbs) opened the dual by defeating Bo Bettinson in a 2-0 thriller. After neither wrestler recorded a point in the first overtime session, Demo's takedown at 9:53 in the second overtime session was the deciding factor. Freshman Alphonso Vruno (133 lbs) followed Demo's win with a 9-5 decision victory of his own as he defeated Ray McQueen. Vruno came out aggresively, dominating the first period as he recorded a takedown at 0:50 and a three-point nearfall at 1:10 en route to the win.

Freshman Thomas Allen (149 lbs), sophomore Cody Quinn (165 lbs) and junior Brendan Eichmann (174 lbs) were part of a stretch where MSU recorded tech fall wins in three out of four matches, including consecutively at 165 lbs and 174 lbs . Allen defeated Pat Baruth 17-2, Quinn defeated Gabe Vasquez 16-0 and Eichmann defeated Andrew Hartshorn 22-6. Senior Alex Folk (157 lbs) also recorded a 8-6 decision win over Bryce Robbins in that stretch.

Waldorf won consecutive matches as Anthony Pike defeated senior Aaron Norgren (184 lbs) 3-2 and Ben Binversie defeated senior Nathan Haynes 9-2.

Junior newcomer Corby Running won the heavyweight bout 11-7 over Angel Gomez. A two-point nearfall at 1:48 helped propel Running to the win.

MSU will return to action Saturday as they travel to Decorah, Iowa to compete in the Luther College Open.
