JACKSON, Minn. – No. 14-ranked Augustana went 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the “Battle for the Planes” hosted by Air Force Academy at Jackson County Central High School in Jackson, Minn. The Vikings started the afternoon with a 42-6 win over Northwestern (Iowa) before defeating Dakota Wesleyan 44-6. Augustana ended the day with a 36-0 loss to Division I Air Force Academy.
The Vikings took an early 6-0 lead against Northwestern when TJ North won by forfeit. Augustana extended its lead to 12-0 on a pin by Brandon Chesnut. Northwestern got on the board for its only points of the dual as Zach Friederich was pinned.
Nate Herda (149 pounds) got the Vikings right back on track with a 13-2 major decision, extending Augustana’s lead to 16-6. Augustana would not lose another bout the entire match going on to the 42-6 win.
Against Dakota Wesleyan, North provided a fast start and a 6-0 lead with a pin at 125 pounds. Jeremiah Peterson won by forfeit at 133 pounds followed by a pin by Friederich to put Augustana up 18-0.
The Vikings would continue to cruise and on back-to-back pins by Jeff Nielsen (184 pounds) and Jayd Docken (197 pounds). Augustana was open at 285 pounds giving Dakota Wesleyan its six points in the dual.
Augustana fought hard against Air Force Academy but came up short in the dual. Josh Martinez got Air Force on the board early with a 9-1 major decision over North at 125 pounds. Dylan Hyder then won an 11-4 decision over Peterson.
Cole VonOhlen, ranked No. 8 in Division I, won a 12-4 major decision over Herda at 149 pounds. Tim Weber lost a 3-1 decision to Willie Baker at 174 pounds and Sean Derry dropped a 4-0 decision to Konner Witt at 184 pounds. Docken lost a 3-1 decision to Josh Mohr at 197 and Air Force won the 285-pound bout by forfeit.
Augustana returns to action on Jan. 5 in a dual at Concordia-Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn.
