ST. CLOUD, Minn. – William Giddings set career-highs in both points (19) and rebounds (9), while teammate Jordan Miller also scored 19 points to lead Southwest Minnesota State to an 85-69 road victory over No. 24 St. Cloud State on Saturday night.
SMSU (14-9, 13-6 NSIC) has now won a season-high four straight games and earned its first win over a Top 25 team since March 3, 2010.
The Mustangs shot a season-high 61.1 percent (33 of 54) and made 6 of 14 3-pointers.
Giddings finished the game making 7 of 15 field goals, while Miller was 7 of 10 from the field, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Miller now has scored 997 points in 78 career games. Nick Smith also finished in double figures for SMSU with 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting. SMSU played most of the game without starting point guard Vinard Birch, who played only seven minutes, suffering an injury early in the first half.
Theo Rothstein led SCSU with 19 points and six rebounds.
SMSU held a 44-37 halftime lead and then put the game away shooting 68 percent (17 of 25) from the field in the second half.
SCSU held the lead for the first 13 and a half minutes, including holding an eight-point lead on three different occasions. SMSU slowing cut into the deficit and eventually took its first lead of the contest at 30-28 with 7:06 left following a 3-pointer by Miller.
SCSU answered back with five straight points to take a 33-30 advantage, before SMSU closed out the final six minutes of the half on a 14-4 run to build the seven-point halftime lead.
Miller led SMSU with 13 first half points with three 3-pointers, while Giddings scored 11 in the half.
The game remained close in the first six and a half minutes of the second half, before SMSU put together a key run to put the game away. Leading 56-51 at the 13:35 mark, SMSU outscored SCSU 13-2 in the next six minutes to push the lead to 69-53 with 7:34 remaining in the game and the lead never dipped below 11 for the remainder of the game.
Lavione West had a strong game for SMSU off the bench, scoring nine points, dishing out a career-high five assists and adding three steals. Tramel Barnes chipped in with six points and five rebounds, while Casey Sussenguth added six points and rebounds.
St. Cloud State finished the game shooting 44.1 percent (26 of 59) from the field.
Southwest Minnesota State returns home next weekend for its final two regular season home games of the season. SMSU will begin the weekend taking on Bemidji State on Friday, Feb. 17, with tip-off slated for 8 p.m.
