NSIC Wrestler of the Week

Corey Ulmer, the second ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, went 2-0 this past week, including an upset win over the top ranked wrestler in his weight class. Ulmer started the week with a 7-1 decision against David Demo of Minnesota State. Ulmer used a first period takedown and near fall to come away with the win. The No. 1 versus the No. 2 125-pound match came on Friday night as Ulmer took on Kyle Pedretti of Upper Iowa. Ulmer drew first blood with a takedown in the first period, but Pedretti was able to tie the match in the second period with a reversal. After an escape, Ulmer held a 3-2 lead heading into the final period. After a penalty point, the Dragon wrestler’s lead grew to 4-2. Ulmer escaped to extend his lead to three, 5-2, midway through the third period. Pedretti scored the final points of the match with a takedown, but he was unable to add any back points as Ulmer came away with the 5-4 victory.
NSIC Wrestling Notes
Out of the ten weight classes, the NSIC has five wrestlers ranked No.1 in the nation at their respective weights. The NSIC also has a wrestler ranked in the top four in each of the other five weight classes. (see page 4 of PDF release for full individual national rankings.
AUGUSTANA COLLEGE
Jason Jeremiason (133, Sr., Marshall, Minn./Marshall HS) went 2-0 last week at 133 pounds, helping No. 3 Augustana to conference wins over Southwest Minnesota State and Northern State. On Friday, Jeremiason beat SMSU’s Justin Reinsma 4-2 as his Vikings beat the Mustangs 20-15. He pinned NSU’s Ian Muirhead in 4 minutes, 41 seconds on Sunday to key a 31-4 Augustana win. The senior is 12-1 and ranked No. 2 in the country.
UNIVERSITY OF MARY
Trevor Johnson (141, So., Bismarck, ND / Bismarck HS / North Dakota State) ran his record to 25-5 this season with a 12-3 major decision over Ethan Hildebrandt of Southwest Minnesota State. It was one of three wins for the Marauders in a dual at SMSU, the lone action of the week for U-Mary. Brady Anderson (184, Jr., Hamilton, MT) and Collin Engelhardt (157, Bismarck, N.D.) also picked up wins for the Marauders. Anderson is now 15-6 this season and Engelhardt is 12-7.
MINNESOTA STATE
Freshman Cody Quinn (Covington, Wash.) recorded a three point near fall after back-to-back takedowns before pinning Jacob Bennett (MSU-Moorhead) at 1:33. The fall moves Quinn to 16-4 on the year, and increases his dual record to 7-2. Minnesota State defeated MSU-Moorhead 31-6 on Thursday...MSU recorded back-to-back major decision wins at 133-lb by senior Brian Reisenauer (Fargo, N.D.) and at 141-lb by junior Robby Fisher (Bloomington, Minn.)...Senior Tel Todd (Bozeman, Mont.) made quick work of Derek Lee at 157-lb, defeating him 17-2 in the second period...Sophomore Brendan Eichmann (Hastings, Minn.) and freshman Brandon Pederson (Waseca, Minn.) each recorded their 15th win of the season as they each won via decisions at 174-lb and 184-lb respectively...MSU will wrestle Northern State and U-Mary this week.
MSU MOORHEAD

NORTHERN STATE
Neil Sell (157 pounds, So, Seabeck, Wash./Klahowya Secondary) recorded a 19-second pin of Dickinson State’s Jake Sherbrune to spark a string of six straight Northern State wins in the Wolves’ 28-12 win over the 15th ranked (NAIA) Bluehawks on Thursday night. It was the Wolves’ first win over DSU since 2008.
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
Jacob Begin (165, So., Anoka, Minn.) improved to 19-4 on the season going 2-0 last weekend picking up an 11-4 decision over Bradyn Neises of Augustana before winning an 8-5 decision over the University of Mary’s Taylor Nagel on Saturday. Tied at 5 with Nagel owning a riding time advantage, Begin picked up a late reversal and a takedown to score three points as the buzzer sounded to earn the 8-5 decision. With the two wins, Begin has now won 10 straight matches dating back to Dec. 9.
Martin Hagen (197, Sr., Hanley Falls, Minn.) improved to 15-7 on the season with two wins this past weekend. Hagen earned a 3-2 decision over Augustana’s Brian Schultz on Friday night before earning a 7-5 decision over Kriss McCleary of the University of Mary on Saturday.
ST. CLOUD STATE
Derek Skala (184 lbs, Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) charted an 8-3 victory over #5 ranked (NCAA Division III) Mitch Hagen of St. John’s University on Feb. 2 at St. Cloud State. The victory helped lift the #1 ranked Huskies to a big 30-10 victory over #8 ranked (NCAA Division III) St. John’s University in Halenbeck Hall. Skala is currently ranked #3 in the nation at 184-pounds and owns a 21-2 record for the Huskies this winter.
The Huskies are currently ranked #1 in the nation and they tied a team record by collecting their 19th dual meet win of the season on Feb. 2 with a 30-10 win over St. John’s. SCSU also hit 19 wins during the record-setting 2010-11 season, and the Huskies will attempt to set the new team season dual match record on Feb. 12 with a 2 p.m. home match against NSIC rival Upper Iowa. The Huskies will finish out the dual match season on Feb. 16 with a road match at Minnesota State in Mankato…the showdown against Upper Iowa will be another big one for the Huskies, as it will pit #1 ranked SCSU against the #3 ranked Peacocks…overall, SCSU owns a 502-284 record in matches against its competition this season…#1 ranked Jake Kahnke owns a 27-1 record at 285-pounds this season…#1 ranked Tad Merritt continues to dominate this winter with a 28-2 overall record that includes 15 pins…Josh Howk leads the club with 16 pins this season and his season record stands at 22-12. Other members of the SCSU 20-win club this season include Zach Stewart (20-10), Luke Munkelwitz (21-4) and Jack Barnes (21-9)…Tad Merritt has 134 career victories and needs just eight more wins to tie the record of 142 career wins set by Dustin Darveaux from 1999 to 2003…SCSU will host the 2012 NCAA Division II Super Region 3 tournament on Feb. 26 in Halenbeck Hall. UPPER IOWA
Upper Iowa picked up another NSIC win and pushed their record to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the NSIC. The Peacocks defeated the Dragons of MSU Moorhead in Dorman, 37-7, after winning eight of the ten matches including three by fall, one by technical fall and a pair of major decisions. Trevor Franklin, Winston Robbins and Zach Rosol all registered wins by fall, while Carl Broghammer picked up the technical fall victory and Jordan Rinken and Mitch Schultz earned major decisions. With his win, Franklin pushed his win streak to 34 matches and improved to 18-0 this season.
The Peacocks will close out their homestand this Friday night, Feb. 10, against the Vikings of Augustana College. Both the Peacocks and Vikings are tied in the number three spot in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m. and the wrestling program will recognize their four seniors prior to the beginning of the dual. Fans attending the final home dual are encouraged to “Black Out” Dorman Gymnasium by wearing black to the event.
