GAME 1 | GAME 2
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Brian Voigt slammed a two-run, walk-off home run to lift Augustana to a 2-0 win over No. 16 Minnesota State Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader. MSU won the second game 3-1.
Augustana moves to 21-12 (16-6 NSIC), while MSU sits at 25-7 (13-3 NSIC).
The Game 1 win for the Vikings broke a 22-game losing streak in their series with MSU. Augustana had last beaten the Mavericks in 2004.
Voigt's two-run bomb pushed in Nate Hewes, who had singled to lead off the seventh. Voigt finished 1 for 3.
Derek Hansen (5-3) tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout and struck out nine.
Ben Kincaid (4-1) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits in a complete-game effort.
MSU left seven runners on base and had a chance to score in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs. The Vikings, though, got two force outs at home to get out of the jam.
The Vikings held a 1-0 lead heading into the eighth inning of Game 2, but MSU pushed in three runs in the frame to salvage a split.
Augustana got 7.1 inning of work from Casey Jacobson (2-3). The senior allowed one earned run on five hits and fanned five in the loss.
MSU reliever Nick Sutherland (3-0) tossed 4.0 shutout innings and allowed just one hit to earn the victory.
Augustana scored its only run of the game in the sixth off a Jack Goihl double. A lead-off single by Hansen paid off as Goihl doubled next for a 1-0 Viking lead.
A pair of Augustana errors and a home run from Matt Kuchenbecker made the eighth-inning game changing for the Mavericks, scoring them three decisive runs.
Hansen finished 3 for 4, while Goihl went 2 for 4.
The Vikings remain in second place in the NSIC with the split. MSU keeps its top spot in the conference standings.
Augustana will face the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday and Sunday in a four-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is at Harmodon Park, and Sunday's is at Ronken Field.
