WSC Baseball Sweeps Upper Iowa

            The Wayne State baseball team swept the weekday series with Upper Iowa as the ‘Cats won game one by a score of 8-4 and were victorious in game two 3-2. With the two wins, WSC improves to 22-12 overall on the season and 13-7 in the NSIC while the Peacocks fall to 13-23 overall and 9-12 in conference play.

            Game one saw the scoring get underway early as the Peacocks put up one run in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first when Jake Ritzdorf hit a single to right field to score Mike Bisenius. Travis Parsons would score the second run of the inning on a Peacocks’ passed ball. The game would remain 2-1 in favor of the ‘Cats until Upper Iowa tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Wayne State would once again answer the call as the posted four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The scoring was started with a Parsons double down the left field line to drive in Braulio Acosta. Ritzdorf would get his second RBI of the game when he drove in Justin Beranek. Mike Frericks would cap the scoring in the inning with a two RBI single to right field that brought home Ritzdorf and Parsons to give WSC a 6-2 lead. UIU would score two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 6-4 but Wayne State would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs of their own when Bisenius hit a two run homer to right field scoring himself and Beranek. Wayne State would hold Upper Iowa to zero runs in the top of the seventh inning for the 8-4 victory over the Peacocks. 
            Jake Ritzdorf was a perfect 3-3 in game one with two RBI’s one run and one walk while Mike Bisenius went 2-4 with two RBI’s, two runs and a homerun. Justin Beranek and Travis Parsons also each had two hits in the game while Braulio Acosta, Mike Frericks, Brett Keim and Luke Abkes had one hit apiece.
            Austen Wisroth improved to 5-1 on the mound this season as he went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and no walks while surrendering 12 hits and four runs (four earned). Jerad Barth came in to close the game out and notched his first save of the season with one strikeout in the seventh inning.
            Game two was jumpstarted when the Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead over Upper Iowa. Travis Parsons singled to center field to drive in Justin Beranek and the Jake Ritzdorf took the very next pitch to center field as well to bring home Mike Bisenius. The Wildcats would bolster their lead in the bottom of the fifth as they tacked on one run C.J. Nolen singled to right field to record the RBI and score Travis Parons. Upper Iowa would score two runs in the top of the seventh inning but WSC would close the door on them their and go on for the 3-2 win.
            Ritzdorf swung a hot bat again in game two as he went 3-4 at the plate with one RBI. Justin Beranek notched two hits and a run while Travis Parsons and and C.J. Nolen each recorded a hit as well.
            Tadd Johansen went 7.1 innings on the mound for Wayne State and struck out four batters while walking two others and surrendered seven hits and two runs (two earned). Jared Barth came in to pitch 1.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts in his second save of the season.
         The Wildcats will be hit the road this weekend for a four-game Northern Sun Conference series at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minnesota with doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at noon each day.
