Game 1 - Wayne State 2 #10 Winona State 0

Game 2 - #10 Winona State 5 Wayne State 1

Sara Scheffert fired a two-hit shutout and Kaiti Williams blasted a two-run homer to help the Wayne State softball team split a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon with #10 Winona State at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.  The Wildcats captured the opener 2-0 while the Warriors earned a 5-1 win in the second contest.  Wayne State is now 26-20 overall and 12-12 in the NSIC while Winona State is now 36-7 and 17-5 in league play.
The story of the first game was the pitching of Scheffert and the hitting of Williams as the two freshmen led the Wildcats in a 2-0 win over the nationally-ranked Warriors.  The only scoring of the game came in the third inning when Vicki Nielsen was hit by the pitch followed by a Williams home run over the left center field wall for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.  That’s all the support Scheffert would need as the freshman from Lincoln Southeast fired a two-hit shutout striking out six while walking just one batter as the Wildcats posted a 2-0 win.
WSC had four hits in the win highlighted by Williams going 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBI’s.  Nielsen and Brittany Greenwood each singled for the ‘Cats.
The second game saw Winona State score three runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game as the Warriors posted a 5-1 win.  Winona State opened the score with one run in the first, but WSC came back in the second to tie the score at 1-1 as Kelcie Bormann walked and later scored on a groundout by Megan Hagemann to even the score at 1-1.  Winona State took the lead for good with a run in the fourth inning and added three insurance runs in the sixth for the 5-1 win.
Winona State had seven hits compared to four by WSC.  Dani Sandel was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.  Kelcie Bormann doubled while Vicki Nielsen singled.  Bormann (6-5) suffered the pitching loss, allowing five runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings while Jordan Harris pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit.
WSC will face Nebraska-Kearney in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Kearney starting at 2:00 p.m.
