Minnetonka, Minn. - Fifth seeded St. Cloud State defeated fourth seeded Minnesota State 5-1 in the opening match of the NSIC Women’s Tennis Tournament played at Life Time Fitness in Minnetonka, Minn. The Huskies advance to the semifinals where they will take on top seeded Augustana College today at approximately 4:00 p.m.

St. Cloud State took an early lead as their No. 1 doubles team of Cassandra Brown and Katie Kotschevar defeated MSU’s Kathryn Gavin and Shealyn Bakke 8-0. The No. 3 doubles for Minnesota State maintained a close lead and were able to pull off the last two games to even the dual at 1-1 with an 8-5 win. Then at No. 2 doubles, the Huskies duo of Catarina Franca and Tanya Halloran started off ahead 3-0 but MSU’s Brandi Dohmen and Hailey Robb fought back to take a 4-3 lead and held the lead until 7-6. Then the Huskies won the last three games and the match 9-7.

In singles action SCSU took the first sets in five of the six singles matches. MSU was able to win the first set at #4 singles. Franca (6-0, 6-2), Brown (6-3, 6-2) and Hanna Kantor (6-1, 6-2) won their matches at No. 3, No. 1 and No. 6 singles to complete the victory. No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches were unfinished.
