WINONA, Minn. – Adam Gemuenden laced a walk-off single in game one as the Winona State baseball team split with Wayne State Wednesday at Loughrey Field in a NSIC doubleheader. The Warriors claimed game one 3-2 in ten innings before dropping game two 5-2.
Gemuenden came to bat with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth and singled to center to give Winona State a dramatic victory. WSU is now 23-16 overall on the season and 18-10 in NSIC play.
The Warriors got on the board first in the second inning of game one, as Adam Gemuenden was hit by a pitch, moved up to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Nelson. Wayne State took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run homer.
WSU tied the game at two in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kyle Sill. Neither team could score until the bottom of the tenth, when the Warriors secured the victory on Gemuenden’s walk-off single.
The Warriors loaded the bases in the tenth, with Nate Van Roekel leading off by being hit by a pitch. Derek Wojcik and Cody Strang followed with back-to-back singles, setting up Gemuenden’s winning hit. Gemuenden lined a single into center field to send the Warriors away with the extra inning victory.
Aaron Hoverson pitched seven strong innings for the Warriors, striking out one while allowing just four hits and two runs. Tyler Zemla earned the win after pitching three innings of relief, giving up just one hit while striking out two.
Wayne State took an early lead in game two, getting a solo home run in the second and three more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Warriors snuck back into the game in the bottom of the third, with Cody Strang hitting a two-run double that scored Van Roekel and Ryan Ledvina.
Wayne State added one more run in the fourth to claim the 5-2 lead.
Mike Wasilik pitched 3 1/3 innings in game two. Matt Bonestroo and Scott Frieburger threw 3 2/3 innings of work while only allowing a pair of hits.
Winona State will travel to Bemidji State for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend. First pitch Saturday and Sunday is set for noon.
