ROCHESTER, Minn. – Kim Wachholder led the Warriors with four RBI as Winona State’s bats exploded in a 10-2 victory over Northern State in the NSIC Tournament Friday in Rochester.
The Warriors scored four runs in the first and added five more in the second to put away the Wolves in an elimination game in the conference tournament.
Winona State struck immediately, scoring four in the bottom of the first inning. Brooke Piotrowski walked to lead off the frame and Molly Link followed with a single. Kim Wachholder rocketed a three-run homer down the left field line to put the Warriors up 3-0 with no outs. Britt Stewart and Sam Hildebrandt singled, with Ashley Walker scoring Stewart on an RBI groundout to move the lead to 4-0.
The Warriors added another five runs in the second as Brooke Piotrowski led off the frame with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Kathy Crudo. A Stewart single scored Crudo, who in turn was driven home on a double by Hildebrandt. Walker put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run home run to center field and a 9-0 WSU lead.
Wachholder plated another run for the Warriors in the third, hitting a triple off the wall in center field that scored Piotrowski.
Northern State got on the board in the top of the fourth on a solo home run, one of the five hits Struzynski scattered throughout the game. NSU added one more run in the fifth but could not keep the Warriors from finishing the contest in five innings.
Struzynski struck out three while allowing five hits and one earned run. The senior is now 21-5 on the season.
The Warriors are now 40-9 overall on the season, the seventh time in the last 11 seasons that Winona State has reached the 40 win mark.
Winona State will play next at 1 pm on Friday, taking on the loser of Friday morning’s matchup between Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth.
