NCAA Central Region Baseball Tournament Teams Announced

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee has selected the 48 teams that will participate in the 2012 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. The championship provides for eight regional sites – six sites will host six teams, the west region will host four teams and the south region will host eight teams. All regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played May 17-21. Regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 26-June 2 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The finals will be hosted by Mount Olive and the town of Cary, N.C.

The double-elimination regional tournament, which will be held at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, is scheduled to run May 17-21. The regional champion advances to the eight-team championship finals May 26 through June 2 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Minnesota State, who are making their seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason tournament, will face a team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in Regis University (32-21) in first round action of this year’s NCAA Division II Central Regional Thursday.

MSU will make the program's 31st appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament when it participates in the NCAA Central Regional in Mankato this week.

MSU is seeded first, Regis sixth. The other first round games include: #2 St. Cloud State (45-12) vs. #5 Winona State (29-20) and #3 Colorado Mesa (39-14) vs. #4 New Mexico Highlands (39-14). Times for the regional tournament will be announced Monday.

MSU’s 31 NCAA Tournament appearances rank only behind Florida Southern’s 39 trips to the national tournament. The Mavericks stand 46-51 overall in NCAA regional play. The Mavericks have won four regional titles - 1971, 1979, 1980, 1986 and 2010. Minnesota State has hosted six regional tournaments - 1968, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1977 and 1988.
