BURNSVILLE, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs were selected by the league coaches as the overall and north division preseason favorite in the NSIC in 2012. The Bulldogs received nine first place votes and amassed 217 points, six more than St. Cloud State (211), who garnered six other first place votes. Minnesota State was picked third overall, received a first place vote and was the coaches’ top choice in the south. Winona State (175) was fourth in the poll and picked second in the south while Augustana (169) was fifth overall and third in the south.
St. Cloud State was picked second in the north division and will boast the NSIC North Division Offensive Preseason Player of the Year in quarterback Phillip Klaphake and North Division Defensive Preseason Player of the Year in defensive back Marvin Matthews. Winona State running back Rayon Simmons was chosen as the NSIC South Division Offensive Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season while Augustana’s linebacker Austin Luecke was picked as the South Division Defensive Preseason Player of the Year.
As in the past four seasons, the NSIC football schedule will be broken into two divisions (north/south). Each team will play 11 conference games that will count towards the NSIC Overall Champion as well as seven divisional games that will count towards the NSIC North/South Championships. In all, three league championships will be awarded (Overall Champion, North Division Champion, South Division Champion). Ties will not be broken for overall or division champions.

NSIC North Offensive Preseason Player of the Year
#16 Phillip Klaphake
(QB, 6-1, 185, Jr., Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS)
St. Cloud State University
Klaphake is a 2011 First Team All-NSIC quarterback and Academic All-NSIC Team member. He was named Third Team Offense on the 2011 Don Hansen Super Region Three team. He earned NSIC Player of the Week honors on Sept. 6, 2011. For a second straight year Klaphake will captain the Huskies. He has quarterbacked St. Cloud State to back to back NCAA Division II Football playoff appearances and the 2011 NSIC Co-Championship. In two seasons, he has passed for over 4,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 career yards. He ranks fourth on SCSU’s all-time passing chart with 4,953 career yards. He ranks 21st in career rushing with 1,209 yards and is third in all-purpose yardage with 6,162 yards. His single game career high in passing yards came in 2011 with a 342-yard performance. St. Cloud State has a 19-5 record, two NCAA playoff appearances and an NSIC title in Klaphake’s two seasons at quarterback. He holds several single season records including best completion percentage (65.6), most yards gained passing (2,918), most rushing/passing plays in a season (475) and most yards gained rushing and passing (3,716). Klaphake is a 2012 All State AFCA Good Works Team nominee.

St. Cloud State University
Matthews is a three-year starter at defensive back for the Huskies. He is a 2011 AFCA Division II First Team All-America, First Team All-NSIC, D2Football.com All-America Second Team and a Daktronics Super Region #3 Second team pick. In 2011 he led the Huskies in solo stops with 46 and ranked second on the team in total tackles with 70. He notched a team high three interceptions during the season. He recorded a season high ten tackles against Bemidji State on Nov. 5. He was an Honorable Mention All-NSIC team pick in 2010. Matthews is a 2012 BSN Third Team Preseason All-America.
NSIC South Offensive Preseason Player of the Year
#1 Rayon Simmons
(RB, 5-10, 205, Sr., St. Louis, Mo. /Christian Brothers Academy/Northern Iowa)
Winona State University
Simmons was an All-Region selection and All-NSIC First Team honoree in 2011. He enters his senior season needing 392 yards to become Winona State’s all-time leading rusher after he ran for 1,326 yards last season, the fourth most single-season yards in school history. He is the fourth player in school history to reach 3,000 yards as he has run for 100 yards or more seven times. He put back-to-back 200 yard games against Southwest Minnesota State and Mary last season as he averaged 120.5 yards per game Simmons scored the game-winning touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in a 27-24 win at Wayne State. He carried the ball 37 times in the win, one off the school record.

#45 Austin Luecke

Augustana College
Senior linebacker Austin Luecke frontlines the Augustana defense in 2012 returning as the team’s leading tackler in 2011. Luecke, an All-NSIC South Division first team and Daktronics All-Super Region three second team selection in 2011, finished the season with 107 tackles, including a team-high 47 solo stops. Luecke had 10 or more tackles in a game six times last season and registered 10.0 tackles for loss. In NSIC contests, Luecke finished fourth in the league with 97 tackles, including 44 solo tackles.

#11 Josh Hanson (QB, 6-1, 175, Sr., Watertown, S.D./Watertown HS)
Josh Hanson enters his senior campaign in 2012 and will call the signals from the quarterback position. An All-NSIC South Division second team honoree in 2011, Hanson completed 238 of 378 pass attempts for 2,640 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. He guided the team to a 6-5 finish throwing for 200 or more yards eight times and more than 300 yards three times averaging 240.0 yards per game. Hanson led the team with 2,740 yards of total offense and ranked second in the NSIC with 231.8 passing yards per game and with 243.4 yards of total offense.
#45 Austin Luecke (LB, 6-1, 225, Sr., Groton, S.D. / Groton HS)
Luecke frontlines the Augustana defense in 2012 returning as the team’s leading tackler in 2011. Luecke, an All-NSIC South Division first team and Daktronics All-Super Region three second team selection in 2011, finished the season with 107 tackles, including a team-high 47 solo stops. A 2012 Beyond Sports Network Division II Preseason All-America Honorable Mention, in 2011, Leonhardt earned Daktronics All-America Second Team Offense, D2Football.com All-America Honorable Mention, Daktronics, Inc. Super Region #3 First Team, All-NSIC First Team and Consensus Draft Services 2011 Preseason All-America Honorable Mention Football Team honors... Started all 11 games and led the team in receptions (35) and reception yards (483), to surpass his totals from 2010 and established career-highs in both categories... Averaged 43.9 yards per game and 13.8 yards per reception with two touchdowns... An extension of the offensive line that guided the second best rushing attack (No. 10 nationally) in the league for 241.5 yards per game... Helped protect quarterback Lance Rongstad as the Beavers ranked first in the NSIC and No. 6 in the nation in sacks allowed (.91 sacks allowed per game)... A 2012 Beyond Sports Network Division II Preseason All-America Honorable Mention, in 2011, Shaver stepped into the starting nose tackle position and earned Don Hansen All-Super Region Three Third Team and All-NSIC First Team honors... Played in 10 games, started eight, and totaled 24 tackles (four solo), including a tackle for loss (-1 yard)... A contributor to the No. 3 scoring defense in the nation (16.0 points allowed per game) and No. 18 rushing defense nationally (110.6 rushing yards allowed per game)… Posted a career-high seven tackles at University of Mary Oct. 22... Recorded three tackles including a tackle for loss at No. 16 Augustana College Sept. 10.
Concordia-St. Paul
#16 Tre Mason (WR, 6-3, 210, Jr. League City, Texas / Clear Creek HS / Howard Payne Univ.)
Tre Mason burst onto the scene as an impact transfer last season, earning All-NSIC Honorable Mention honors while ranking in the top-10 in the league in receiving yards (64.7/game, 8th) while scoring six total touchdowns. A big play threat, Mason averaged 22.3 per reception and had longs of 66, 64, 59, 57 and 44 yards in five different games. His breakout performance was a 4-catch, 85-yard and 2-touchdown game in a 27-23 win over Northern State in week three. He had at least 57 receiving yards in all but two contests.
#44 Chris Sesson (LB, 6-1, 222, So., Chicago, Ill. / Robeson HS)
TChris Sesson had a solid sophomore campaign as a first year starter by delivering 28 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. He added impact plays with a forced fumble and his first career interception in a home win over Wayne State. His top-5 individual performances were all in Concordia victories, as he made a season-high seven tackles with 2.0 TFL at Minot State in week one, had six tackles (0.5 TFL) in a week three win over Northern State, had the interception in a week six win over Wayne State, and had four tackles in each in wins over Minnesota Crookston and SMSU in weeks nine and 11, respectively.
University of Mary
#88 (Tyler Steffan (WR, 6-4, 210, Sr., Dickinson, N.D. / Dickinson HS)
Steffan became the Marauders first NCAA AFCA All-American after leading Division II in touchdown receptions with a school record 17. Steffan also earned All-NSIC and all-region recognition. The junior from Dickinson, ND, caught 54 passes for 914 yards, averaging 16.9 yards per reception. The NSIC touchdown leader finished 15th in the nation with an average of 9.27 points per game. Steffan was second in the conference in receptions and receiving yards. He also set the school single game record for scoring receptions and tied the U-Mary single game school record for touchdowns when he twice caught four scoring strikes in a game.
#44 Mike Ingemansen (LB, 6-0, 225, Sr., Bismarck, N.D. / Bismarck HS) )
Ingemansen is the senior leader of the Marauders defense. Entering his second season as a starter, Ingemansen was a big play performer for U-Mary last season, finishing fourth on the squad with six tackles for loss. An NSIC All-Academic performer, the Bismarck native totaled 36 tackles, had a sack and broke up three passes.
Minnesota, Crookston
#7 Richard Haley (RB, 6-0, 205, Sr., Detroit, Mich. / Grand Rapids CC)
Haley returns for his senior season after setting the University of Minnesota, Crookston single-season rushing record as a junior with 1,556 yards on 305 carries with eight touchdowns. He also surpassed the mark for rushing attempts in a season for a Golden Eagle player. Haley was selected to the NSIC North Division All-Conference First Team Offense in his first season at UMC after transferring from Grand Rapids Community College. In addition, he was named a Beyond Sports College Network (BSN) Pre-Season All-America Second Team pick heading into the 2012 campaign. He averaged 141.5 yard per game and 5.1 yards per carry to lead the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference a season ago. In addition, he was second in the conference in all-purpose yards with 1,631.
#Tevin Kellum (DB, 6-1, 195, Jr., Detroit, Mich. / Grand Rapids CC)
Tevin Kellum amassed 71 tackles from the defensive backfield a season ago to place second on the University of Minnesota, Crookston squad in that category. His 71 tackles also ranked him among the top in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in that category. In addition, he racked up 2.5 tackles for loss for a net of 10 yards and five pass breakups in his first season with the Golden Eagles after transferring from Grand Rapids Community College.
Minnesota Duluth
#18 Chase Vogler (QB, 6-1, 195, Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Rosemount HS)
Since taking over the Bulldogs’ No. 1 signal-calling duties one game into his rookie season, Vogler has quarterbacked UMD to one NCAA II national championship and three NSIC titles while amassing a remarkable 36-4 record as a starter. He enters his farewell season holding down the No. 3 spot on the school’s all-time list for both total offense (7,286 yards) and passing yards (5,276) while sporting the highest completion percentage (.629) in team history. Vogler, a 2011 All-NSIC North Division selection and one of five UMD team captains for 2012, connected on a 179 of 280 passes (for a career-high .639 efficiency mark) last fall with 13 touchdowns. He is UMD’s all-time leading ground gainer for quarterbacks, rolling up 2,010 yards on 390 carries (5.2 yards per try) and 22 scores.
#27 Cameron Harper (FS, 6-2, 215, Sr., Blaine, Minn. / Spring Lake Park HS)
Harper is a two-time All-NSIC North Division first team selection who will be embarking on his third season of starting duty in the Bulldog defensive secondary this fall. The 2012 Bulldog team captain closed out his junior year with 75 total tackles to rank fourth on the club and now has 206 stops to his collegiate credit to go with six interceptions and 10 pass breakups.
Minnesota State
#9 Adam Thielen (WR, 6-3, 200, Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn. / Detroit Lakes HS)
Thielen started all 12 games a year ago and was a Second Team All-NSIC South Division pick. Last year the Detroit Lakes, Minn., native caught five or more passes in eight games and had a season-high 108 yards receiving against Wayne State and caught a season-high eight passes against Augustana and Northeastern State. Thielen also serves as MSU’s primary punt returner.
#93 Chris Schaudt (DE, 6-4, 265, Jr., Slater, Iowa / Ballard HS)
Schaudt started all 12 games a year ago and was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week after recording six tackles for a loss last season against Minnesota, Crookston. The Slater, Iowa native was a First-Team All-NSIC pick and was also a Daktronics All-Region selection after collecting 54 tackles, including 16.5 for a loss and eight sacks last season.
MSU Moorhead
#
40 Brandon Schell (RB, 5-10, 185, So., Lisbon, N.D. / Lisbon HS)
Schell played in nine games at running back and rushed 48 times for 124 yards. He caught 11 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. He ran for a season high 33 yards on 7 carries against Northern State on Nov. 5 and recorded a season high 34 receiving yards also against NSU.
#5 Tyler Brody (S, 6-1, 205, Sr., Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall HS)
Brody started all 11 games as a junior while earning 115 tackles, 51 solo and 64 assisted. He finished 18th in the nation in tackles and 3rd in the conference. He tallied one sack and three tackles for a loss, broke up three passes and grabbed two interceptions while returning them for 44 yards. He blocked one kick, forced one fumble and recovered two fumbles, one to seal an overtime homecoming victory against Minnesota, Crookston. Brody was named to the All-Northern Sun Honorable Mention team.
Minot State
#69 Mitch Haugeberg (OL, 6-3, 2935, Sr., Minot, N.D./Minot HS)
A four-year veteran of the Minot State offensive line, Haugeberg has 29 starts in his career, most of any returning MISU player. He has started 20 straight games for the Beavers and 29 of 31 games MISU has played. Haugeberg helped Minot State to 295.3 yards per game in 2011.
#40 Chad Marshall (LB, 6-2, 215, Jr., Hazen, N.D./Hazen HS)
Marshall started all 10 games in 2011, leading the team in total tackles with 81 (46 solo, 35 assisted). He was second on the team in both tackles for a loss (7.5) and sacks (2.5). His 43 solo tackles were a career high and the most for the Beavers over the past four seasons. Marshall finished with a career high 12 tackles and had 2.5 sack against Black Hills State (11/5). He has 141 tackles combined in his first two season.
Northern State
#7 Chris Morton (WR, 5-11, 185, Sr., Vernal, Utah/Unita HS/Snow Coll.)
Morton played in and started all 11 games of the season for the Wolves in 2011. He lead the NSU receiving corps with 528 receiving yards on 35 catches. He also had seven of the team’s 11 TD catches on the season. Morton also served as one of the Wolves’ primary kick returners, bringing back nine punts and 25 kickoffs for a grand total of 663 yards.
#49 Logan Fahnhorst (LB, 6-1, 225, Sr., Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata HS
Fahnhorst returns to the Wolves’ defensive backfield in 2012 after playing in and starting all 11 games of the 2011 season. One of the defensive squad leaders, Fahnhorst recorded 29 total tackles for the Wolves, including two for a loss and one sack. He also had one of NSU’s nine interceptions on the year and forced one fumble.
Sioux Falls
#7 Taylor Perkins (QB, 6-1, 210, Sr., Mesa, Ariz. / New Mexico State University)
Perkins saw action in six games last season, ultimately earning the starting QB role after beginning the year in the number two spot. He played an integral part in USF’s late comeback and nearly upset at FCS, D-I McNeese State (La.) where he picked up 44 yards on the ground, 146 through the air, and one touchdown. Perkins completed 51.4% of his passes to total 823 yards and 11 TDs and finished with passer rating of 146.1. He also had the team’s third highest rushing total with 222 yards and two TDs, as well as USF’s longest run of the year, a 40 yard scramble versus Minot State.
#5 Nick Bonte (LB, 6-0, 195, Sr., Garretson, S.D. / South Dakota State University)
Bonte started every game last season while recording seven or more tackles in five of nine games. He was a first team All-Dakota Transition selection and posted a season-high 10 stops to lead the Cougar defense at Minot State. He had a monster game in USF’s valiant effort at FCS D-1 McNeese State, where he filled the stat sheet recording nine tackles, four for a loss (17 yards), two sacks, one forced fumble, and one pass break up. He ranked first in forced fumbles and tackles for a loss with 12 tackles for a loss (39yds) and three forced fumbles.
Southwest Minnesota State
#14 Tyler Peschong (QB, 6-5, 226, Sr., Marshalltown, Iowa / Marshalltown HS)
Peschong started all 11 games for SMSU in 2011, completing 243 of 419 pass attempts for 2,627 yards and 20 touchdowns. Peschong, a second team All-NSIC South Division honoree in 2011, also rushed for 414 yards and seven touchdowns.
#56 J.J. Bobrowicz (LB, 6-3, 259, Jr. Crystal Lake, Ill. / Crystal Lake HS)
Bobrowicz started all 11 games last season and is SMSU’s top returning tackler after racking up 71 tackles, including 4.5 for loss last season.
St. Cloud State

#31 Chris Smith (RB, 5-8, 180, So., Brown Deer, Wis. / Brown Deer HS)
Smith was named to the Beyond Sports Network Preseason All-American Third Team after leaving NSIC defenders in his wake in a sensational rookie season for the Peacocks. Following the 2011 season, Smith was named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 3 Second Team and garnered two of the top honors in the NSIC as the 2011 Northern Sun Conference Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Year; he also earned a spot on the All-NSIC South Division First Team. He ran into the record books posting two games with over 200 yards rushing in back-to-back weeks against Southwest Minnesota State University and Wayne State College. His 287 yards versus the Wildcats are the most yards rushed in a game by a UIU player, while his 230 yards against the Mustangs are fourth best in Peacock history. Smith accumulated 1,188 yards and 9 touchdowns on 154 carries in NSIC games, while missing 8 quarters of action due to injury. He topped the 100-yard mark six times and posted an impressive 7.7 yards per carry average in NSIC games. Smith added 8 receptions for 97 yards out of the back field to lead the Peacocks in all-purpose yards/game with 142.8. He was twice named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week this season following games against MSU Moorhead and Wayne State.
#36 Tony Leggett (LB, 6-1, 235, Sr., Naples, Fla. / UA Birmingham)
Leggett was named to the Beyond Sports Network Preseason All-American First Team following his second season with Upper Iowa. In 2011, he missed one game due to injury, but started the other ten games and was named to the All-NSIC South Division First Team; he recorded 109 tackles including 52 solo stops and 4 tackles for loss. Leggett broke up three passes on the year and recovered 4 fumbles including one he returned for a touchdown against Minnesota State University Moorhead on Homecoming weekend. The junior linebacker was second in the NSIC in tackles with 100 in 9 NSIC games posting an 11.1 average per game. His 10.9 tackles/game overall was the 9th highest average in the nation through the regular season.
Wayne State
#5 Kevin Paulsen (WR/KR, 5-9, 170, Sr., Pierce, Neb. / Pierce HS)
Paulsen led Wayne State in all-purpose yards per game last season at 111.8. He ranked second on the team in receiving with 38 catches for 509 yards and three TD’s while topping the club in kickoff returns with 26 for 664 yards and one score. Paulsen also excels on special teams for the Wildcats and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in last year’s 7-0 upset win over then #1 ranked Minnesota Duluth. He was an NSIC honorable mention South Division selection last season after earning Second Team All-NSIC South Division honors as a sophomore in 2010.
#91 Richard Daniel (DL, 6-2, 225, Sr., Papillion, Neb. / Papillion Lavista HS)
Daniel has earned All-NSIC South Division First Team honors each of the last two seasons. He ranked fifth on the team in tackles with 59, but makes his mark in sacks and tackles for loss where last season Daniel tied for first in the NSIC in sacks (8) and forced fumbles (4) and was tied for second in tackles for loss with 16 for minus 71 yards. Other post season honors for Daniel last season included Daktronics Super Region #3 All-Region Second Team and D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-American.
Winona State

He is the fourth player in school history to reach 3,000 yards as he has run for 100 yards or more seven times. He put back-to-back 200 yard games against Southwest Minnesota State and Mary last season as he averaged 120.5 yards per game Simmons scored the game-winning touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in a 27-24 win at Wayne State. He carried the ball 37 times in the win, one off the school record.

Williams was an All-NSIC selection in 2011 after he led his team with 97 total tackles. He reached double digit tackles four times including 18 stops against Minnesota Duluth. He. began season with 12 tackles against Michigan Tech and added 15 tackles against Southwest Minnesota State and 12 the next week against U-Mary. He intercepted two passes, returning both for touchdowns, the first was 53 yards against Southwest Minnesota State and the other a 30 yarder at Wayne State. He also forced and recovered a St. Cloud State fumble and recorded a safety at U-Mary
