Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State volleyball team defeated Concordia-St. Paul for the first time since 2002 by a score of 3-2 to improve to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
In the first set Minnesota State was led by senior Chelsea Fogarty who recorded seven kills while hitting .333, as a team the Mavericks hit .333 compared to .156 by the Golden Bears en route to a 25-23 win.
Minnesota State was able to capitalize on the momentum from the first set as they downed Concordia-St. Paul by a score of 26-24 in the second set, Fogarty added six kills and two digs.
Concordia-St. Paul was able to come with the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-18 to tie the match at two sets a piece.
The fifth and final set was tied at three before the Mavericks went on an 8-1 run to pull away 11-4 and eventually earn the 15-11 victory over the Golden Bears.
Minnesota State had four athletes reach double digit kills led by Fogarty who finished the match with 20 kills and eight digs. Senior Kayla Berning added 13 kills, junior Tiana Runck finished with 12 kills and senior Courteney Steinhauser added 10 kills.
The Mavericks will return to action Friday, Sept. 21 as they host Northern State at 7:00 pm at the Taylor Center.
