Sunday afternoon, #6 Upper Iowa hit the mats for the second time in four days to take on the Beavers of Minot State University. The Peacocks closed out Stormin’ Dorman week with another decisive victory by defeating MISU 40-11 in Dorman Gymnasium. UIU improved its dual mark to 6-2 including 2-0 in the Northern Sun. Prior to the match, all former and active military personnel present were individually recognized and honored for their service. The commemorative singlets were auctioned off and three Wounded Warriors were acknowledged: Adam Eilers, Todd Eipperle (UIU '06) and Kent Savage. Those three spoke to the UIU wrestlers after weigh-ins.
Chris Paulus opened the dual with a win by forfeit to give Upper Iowa a 6-0 lead.
Tanner Schmidt then toed the line with Josh Douglas in the 133 pound bout. After an escape from Douglas in the second period, Schmidt scored a reversal and two near fall points to take a 4-1 advantage. With another escape and takedown at the final buzzer, the Charles City, Iowa native earned a 7-3 victory in his first home dual.
Matt Paulus then overwhelmed his opponent from the whistle taking down Flynn Stormer and pinning him in just 33 seconds.
In the 149 pound battle,
Jordan Rinken put on a dominant display against Donovan Williams. Over the course of the match, Rinken scored nine takedowns, one reversal and two penalty points to win by technical fall, 22-7. The win pushed UIU’s lead to 19-0.
At 157 pounds,
Bryce Lumzy squared off against Marcus Polak. In the third period, Polak scored a reversal to tie the match, 3-3, but Lumzy escaped to regain his lead. Another takedown put the Dixon, Illinois native up 6-3. Polak scored a final escape but Lumzy held on for the 6-4 win.
Upper Iowa had pins at back-to-back weights from two of their nationally ranked wrestlers to increase their lead to 34-0.
Wade Gobin (#4 NCAA) and
Blake Sorensen (#8 NCAA) both earned wins by fall in just over a minute.
In the 184 pound match,
Duane Richardson moved up from 149 pounds to take on the backup 157 pounder from Minot, Ricards Avakovs. Upper Iowa agreed to the match rather than take a second Minot State forfeit. Avakovs used a pair of takedowns and racked up three separate near falls on the way to a 19-2 victory.
