Late Goal From Lilly Lifts Warriors To Win Over No. 21 SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. – Caitlin Lilly scored with less than nine minutes to play in regulation, lifting the Winona State soccer team to a 1-0 victory over No. 21 Southwest Minnesota State Sunday in Marshall.

Lilly knocked in her second goal of the season on a pass from Devon Richards with 8:03 remaining in the contest to break the scoreless tie and send the Warriors home with a victory.

The win moves Winona State to 8-2-2 overall on the season and 7-2 in NSIC play. The loss was Southwest Minnesota State's first of the season, moving the Mustangs to 11-1 on the season and 8-1 in conference action.

Winona State turned in another strong defensive showing, allowing just nine shots total and four shots on goal. Alexandra Vial recorded the shutout in goal for WSU, her sixth of the season. Vial made four saves and has allowed just one goal in the team's last five games.

The Warriors were led offensively by Richards and Shauna Rodman, with both players taking two shots. Nine of WSU's 11 shots on the afternoon were on goal.

Winona State will now play five of its final six games at home, beginning with matchups against Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston next weekend.
