Cadena's hat trick completes SMSU's comeback versus Bemidji State

Miranda Cadena netted her first career hat trick in Southwest Minnesota State's 4-3 comeback victory over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday. The Mustangs trailed 3-0 in the second half. It was the first hat trick by a Mustang since Joelle Dean's versus Sioux Falls on Sept. 14, 2004.

The win was SMSU's first win over Bemidji State since 2008 and first road-win over the Beavers since 2004. With the win, SMSU extends its winning streak to nine straight and now owns a 9-0, 6-0 NSIC record.  SMSU's nine wins are tied for second most in program history – the record is 11which was set by the 1999 squad.

Things didn't look good early for SMSU as the Mustangs saw their scoreless streak end in the second minute when BSU's Mari Wallestad headed in a goal off an Abigail Nyquist corner kick.  The scoreless streak put together by the defensive unit and Brienna Dehkes ended at 390 minutes – a streak that spanned six games and included four consecutive shutouts.

BSU would be the first team to score multiple goals against SMSU all season as the Beavers found the back of the net again in the 19th minute. Mary O'Brien scored her fifth of the season, assisted by Jessie Voeller.

The Beavers would pile it on in the second half as they scored their third goal of the game in the 55th minute. Mary O'Brien scored again for BSU as she was assisted by Voeller.

SMSU took its lumps in the first half but the Mustangs turned it on late when SMSU would get on the board in the 57th minute as Vanesa Corona found the back of the net on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. The goal sparked a ferocious Mustang comeback as Miranda Cadena would score two goals in less than two minutes to pull SMSU from 3-1 down to an even 3-3 score. The goals were Cadena's sixth and seventh goals of the season and her third two-goal game of the season.

With a minutes remaining, Cadena would complete her first career hat trick and complete SMSU's 3-goal comeback when she scored early in the 89th minute.

SMSU has now scored 19 of its 22 goals in the second half.

SMSU will continue NSIC action tomorrow afternoon with a game at Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m.
