BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Tiffany VanHaaften (M, Sr., Chaska, Minn.) scored her fourth goal of the season and Sonja Barr (GK, Jr., Duluth, Minn.) made nine saves for her sixth shutout of the season to lead the Bemidji State University soccer team to a 1-0 victory over University of Minnesota Duluth in NSIC play Friday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium.
Bemidji State took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of play. Abby Nyquist (D, So., Golden Valley, Minn.) got the scoring play started when she cleared the traffic in front of the net with a throw in. VanHaaften was on the back side and beat the goalkeeper to the far post for what would eventually stand as her team-leading third game-winning goal of the season.
Midway through the second half, BSU would take advantage of another set play opportunity. Sam Lumberg (D, Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) booted a free kick into a scrum on front of the UMD goal and Jessie Voeller (F, Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) would connect with it to put the ball on goal, but a Bulldog defender denied BSU a two-goal lead.
In the game's final minutes Minnesota Duluth applied offensive pressure, but the Beavers packed it in and stood tall to post its eighth shutout of the season.
Despite BSU being out shot 28-8 in the game and the Bulldogs holding a 9-5 edge in shots on target, the goal would be the only offense of the day for either team.
The Beavers improve to 12-5-0 on the season and 9-5-0 in NSIC play. The team travels to St. Cloud State University to battle the Huskies in the 2013 regular season finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
