Mankato, Minn. --- Fourth-rated Minnesota State clinched its second straight regular season Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship as it defeated Upper Iowa University 3-0 Friday afternoon at The Pitch.
With the win the Mavericks now own a 34-match NSIC and home unbeaten streak which ranks them tied for 10th and 13th, respectively, in NCAA Division II history. MSU's conference unbeaten streak is the all-time NSIC record.
The first half saw a lot of rough play with both teams coming out attacking each other. Neither team would be able to capitalize on their opportunities as both teams went into the half with no goals on the board.
MSU would come out strong in the second half scoring just 10 minutes into the session. Junior
Emily Moris (Woodbury, Minn.) kicked a high towering corner kick and junior
Sydney Temple (Madison Wis.) headed out over the outstretch hand of UIU's goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel giving MSU the 1-0 lead.
Moris would add a goal in the 76th minute as her initial shot was blocked but would regain control and kick it into the left side from 25 yards to give MSU the 2-0 cushion.
In the 80th minute sophomore
Korey Kronforst (Cary, Ill.) tallied her NSIC league-leading 17th goal of the season off of a crossing pass from fellow sophomore
Emily Erickson (Woodbury, Minn.).
The Mavericks had 17 total shots in the match compared to the Peacocks 10. MSU also led in shots on goal besting UIU 8-4.
Senior goalkeeper
Molly McGough (Centennial, Colo.) compiled four saves on the day.
Minnesota State will travel to Winona State Sunday to take on the Warriors. The game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
