Mankato, Minn. - Four years ago, the University of Minnesota Duluth went into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Finals and came out with a NSIC Title and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Now, they have that same opportunity after defeating long-time rival No. 19 Winona State 3-1 in the semifinal round of the NSIC Tournament at The Pitch in Mankato, Minn. Friday afternoon.
UMD snapped Winona State 13-match winning streak which started after a 2-1 loss at Malosky Stadium earlier this season on Sept. 22 as Bulldogs defeated WSU for the second time this year. The only other time the Bulldogs beat the Warriors twice in its 20-year history was in 2003.
Junior defender
Riley Allen collected the game-winner on a strike through a crowd just inside the 18-yard box. Junior forward
Maureen Stormont sandwiched a pair of goals in between Allen's marker.
Stormont, who scored a pair of goals in the two teams' previous meeting, catapulted a shot that connected with the left side of the net from 15 yards out to give the Dogs a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime and booted in an extra insurance goal, giving UMD a three-goal cushion, in the 76th minute.
The backline led by goalkeeper
Marissa Rosa frustrated the Warriors, taking away chance after chance, and kept them scoreless for the majority of the game until the 86th minute. The Champlin, Minn., native made three saves during the match, which saw Winona State outshoot the Bulldogs 17-10.
UMD awaits the winner of the second semifinals match between Minnesota State Mankato and Upper Iowa. The Bulldogs are 1-1 against the two opponents this year, blanking Upper Iowa 2-0 and falling to MSU-Mankato 1-0. The NSIC Title match is slated for a 1 p.m. start time Sunday at The Pitch.
