ST. PAUL, Minn. - #25 Concordia-St. Paul (8-3, 3-1 NSIC) was led by junior
Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) with 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 71-69 road win over #10 Augustana (6-2, 2-2 NSIC) on Friday night at Elmen Center. Whiting's big night also included her topping 1,000 career points, the 24th player in program history to top the milestone.
Her point guard also had a big individual line as senior
Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn.) had 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as she narrowly missed a triple-double. Whiting's double-double was her second of the season.
Augustana was led by Rhianna Gullickson's 21 points on 8-13 shooting with six rebounds.
Concordia recovered from 27.3 percent (9-33) first half shooting by hitting 59.3 percent (16-27) after the break to overcome a 37-29 halftime deficit.
Concordia used a 13-2 second half run to take its first lead of the game, 54-51 on a Whiting three-pointer which gave her a new season-high 25 points.
Augie responded with a 10-2 run of its own to reclaim a 64-58 lead with 5:51 to play.
The Golden Bears turned up the defense in the final six minutes, using a 13-5 run to secure the win as Augustana was held to just one field goal the rest of the night which was a three-pointer by Gullickson with only seven seconds to play.
After Augie fouled
Carissa Wolyniec, who made one of two, the Vikings' Emily Schulte missed a half court desparation three-pointer as time expired.
Concordia held Augustana to a season-low 24 percent (6-25) from three-point range in its own gym.
Ameshia Kearney was Concordia's third player in double-figures with 12 points including three three-pointers.
The Golden Bears continue the challenging road trip with #17 Wayne State tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb.
