NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Minnesota State’s Nathan Hancock (So., Independence, Mo.) recorded a school record en route to capturing the NSIC Multi championship. Hancock’s 5,301 is the third-best mark by a Division II athlete this season and bested his previous automatic qualifying mark of 5,165 points. At the multi championship, Hancock won the long jump with a leap of 6.91-meters and the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:43.37. Hancock also finished in third-place in the pole vault with a vault of 13-07.25, high jump with a mark of 1.99-meters and the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.14. This marks the second time that Hancock has cleared the automatic qualifying standard of 5,158 points.
NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Northern State’s Luke Hauert (Sr., Plankington, S.D./Stickney HS) won the 60 meter hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.11 seconds at the NDSU Bison Open on Saturday. That marks the fifth straight time Hauert has hit the provisional qualifying standard, while his time of 8.11 seconds matches his season best. Hauert was third coming out of prelims, but won the finals by seven-hundredths of a second.
NSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Minnesota Duluth’s Chanel Miller (So., Burnsville, Minn.) not only captured the NSIC indoor pentathlon title Sunday, but she did so in school record-breaking fashion. The Bulldog sophomore placed first among 20 competitors at Minnesota State University-Mankato’s Myers Fieldhouse with a point total of 3,776. That easily bettered the previous Bulldog standard of 3,288 set by Ally Hartje at the 2009 NSIC indoor event. Miller now sits second in the nation in the pentathlon while reaching a provisional mark during the long jump (5.78m).
NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
University of Mary’s Melissa Agnew (Sr., Onamia, MN), the senior All-American, placed third in the individual mile at the Iowa State Classic clocking a time of 4:45.92, her second best time of the season and an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. She continued her impressive day in Ames, Iowa, as she led U-Mary to an easy victory in the Distance Medley Relay with a provisional national qualifying time. The DMR’s performance of 11:37.20 was the leading time in the nation this winter. Agnew ran the anchor mile in a blazing 4:46.79.
NSIC Team Notes
Augustana
Augustana had a busy weekend, competing at three different events and performing at a high standard at each. The men’s and women’s distance medley relay teams kicked things off on Friday night by both qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The men replace two pieces from last year’s national championship squad and registered the 21st fastest time in the country. The women return three runners from last year’s fifth place team at the NCAA Championships and posted Division II’s seventh-fastest time on Friday night. On Saturday, the majority of the Vikings competed at the NDSU Bison Open and two distance runners stole the show for the Vikings. Jordan Slusser and Emma Anderson each won the 1,000-meter run and Slusser also took home the mile-run crown. CJ Ham improved his provisionally qualifying mark in the shot put and Keegan Carda finished second in the 5,000-metr run.
Henrik Holmberg shattered his own school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with his second-place finish in the heptathlon at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Multi-Event Championships on Sunday and Monday. Holmberg set six personal-bests out of the seven events and tallied 5,213 points to break his school record by nearly 300 points. Holmberg surpassed the auto-qualifying mark of 5,158 and is guaranteed a spot at the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on March 8-9.
Women’s Field: Katie Guse (High Jump, Jr., Waseca, minn./ Waseca HS) placed third in the high jump at the NDSU Open, clearing 1.60 meters. Guse cleared her first two marks on her first attempts each time, but couldn’t surpass the 5-foot-3 mark in three efforts. Guse was the highest Division II-finisher in the event and has already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, clearing 1.69 meters earlier in the season. Guse’s qualifying mark ranks 13th in Division II
Women’s Track: Emma Anderson (Mid-Distance, Fr., Sarona, Wis.) won her second title in as many weeks in the women’s 1,000-meter run. Anderson finished her 1,000 meters in 3:07.32, less that 0.4 seconds off her personal best on the indoor circuit. Anderson edged out her adversaries by .06 seconds to take home the title. Anderson also competed in the mile-run and clocked a 5:28.24 mark for 12th place.
Men’s Track: Jordan Slusser (Mid-Distance, Sr., Jamestown, N.D./ Jamestown HS) took home two titles at the NDSU Bison Open. In his first event, Slusser led a one-two finish for the Vikings with a 4:19.36 time in the one-mile run. Slusser finished the 1,000-meter run in 2:35.68, two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher for his second title of the day. The Jamestown, N.D. native narrowly missed the track record by less that half a second and finished just one second shy of his personal best on an indoor track.
Men Field: CJ Ham (Throws, So., Duluth, Minn./ Denfeld HS) collected two top-seven finishes at the NDSU Bison Open and improved his already qualifying mark in the shot put. Ham set a career-best in both the weight throw and shot put on Saturday. Ham heaved the shot 15.80 meters for fifth place and his mark ranks 31st in NCAA Division II. Ham also earned a seventh-place finish in the weight throw with a 16.60-meter toss which also registered as a career-best.
Bemidji State
Women Track: Ashley Larva (Sr., Floodwood, Minn.) broke her own school record Saturday, en route to winning the 60-meter hurdles at the Van Nelson Open in St. Cloud, Minn. Her season-best time of 8.96 seconds in the event, shaved .03 from her previous school record (8.99). The mark now stands fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) this indoor season and places her among the 40 fastest 60-meter NCAA Division II hurdlers across the country. Larva also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.22.
Women Field: Jessica Cagle’s (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) throw of 14.01 meters (45 feet, 11.5 inches) in the shot put surpassed her previous season-best by over 19 inches. In addition to winning the Van Nelson Open event title by nearly a meter, she moved up to sixth in the NSIC and is among the top 20 throwers in all of NCAA Division II.
Taylor Sautbine (Sr., Tamarack, Minn.) turned in a 3,134-point performance in the pentathlon Sunday to claim sixth place at the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Multi-Event Championships at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minn. Her performance in the five-event contest stands as the best in BSU history, surpassing Caesare Stimson’s mark of 3,098 set in 2004.
BSU rolled up four first place finishes and recorded two provisionally qualifying marks Saturday a the Van Nelson Open in St. Cloud, Minn. Newcomer Sara Melom (Dawson, Minn.) cleared 5-1 in the high jump to take first place and match a season-best an the BSU 4x400-meter relay team took top honors with a time of 4:19.75.
Concordia-St. Paul
Women Track: Freshman Michelle Ndely continues to break her school record performance in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing second at the SCSU Van Nelson Open with a time of 8.98 seconds which eclipsed the previous CU record of 9.13 seconds. She also placed fourth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.42 seconds.
Women Field: Jatonna Freeman-Andrews took first in the weight throw with a 14.41 meter distance at the SCSU Van Nelson Open, while also placing seventh in the shot put at 11.55 meters.
Men Field: Senior Nate Thienes broke his own record in the weight throw at the SCSU Van Nelson Open over the weekend with a mark of 15.63 meters, placing second in the event and surpassing his previous mark of 15.45 meters. He also took third in the shot put with a throw of 14.90 meters.
University of Mary
Men Track & Field: Dustin Rueb captured the long jump title to headline the University of Mary men’s track and field effort at the Bison Open. A sophomore from Beulah, ND, Rueb won the long jump with his first attempt of the day when he cranked out a leap of 22-03.00. The leap set a new Shelly Ellig arena record. Rueb also placed fifth in the high jump. Teammate Thomas Hartwell came in second in the long jump, less than three inches behind Rueb. The U-Mary senior went 22-00.25 on his fourth attempt. Hartwell had set the arena record a week ago. Aaron Teigan claimed third in the triple jump with a best effort of 45-02.50. The Marauders claimed fourth and fifth in the 600 meter run with Deland Weyrauch running a 1:24.92 with Jordan Davis just behind at 1:25.79.

Kathryn Stewart (So., Kingston, Jamaica) continued to roll at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, IA. The reigning NSIC Track Athlete of the Week placed second in the 200 meter open race with a school record and a provisional national qualifying time of 24.51. Earlier in the day the All-American had placed sixth in the 60 meter dash in a provisional qualifying time of 7.68. Stewart had set a new school record in the 60 meters during the preliminaries with a qualifying 7.67.
Several other members of the 14th ranked Marauders also hit key marks at the Iowa State Classic. Dakota Wolf posted a provisional qualifying time of 5:00.01 in the mile. Jennifer Agnew met the provisional qualifying standards in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 17:00.61. At the Bison Open in Fargo, ND, Melissa Walker won the triple jump with a provisional qualifying effort of 37-8.50. She also took second in the long jump and fourth in the 60 meter hurdles. Brittney McKinley hit the 60 meter dash provisional qualifying standards with a clocking of 8.93 seconds.
Minnesota Duluth
The Bulldog men and women combined to claim 19 individual titles at the Lake Superior Challenge, including a pair by senior Kirstern Bjork, who took first in both the 200-meter (26.62) and 400-meter dashes (59.81). Nelson also finished in a dead heat for first (with Heifort) in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.15.
Men Track:The quartet of juniors Jake Nelson, Danny Budhwa, and Cole Toepfer and senior T.J. Struss established a school mark in the sprint medley relay by finishing in a time of 3:34.32 -- bettering the previous mark of 3:38.41 set at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 19, 1993 in Bemidji, Minn. Their winning time was just 0.19 seconds better than the runnerup unit, which was also from UMD -- junior Jacob Heifort, sophomore Phil d’Entremont, freshman Mark Emlaw and sophomore Scott Urban.
Men Field: Ben Niemann turned in a record-breaking performance and earned himself a sixth-place finish in the NSIC Heptathlon. Niemann, a senior team captain from Greeley, Colo., closed out the two-day event with an NCAA Division II provisional-qualifying point total of 4,778, eclipsing the previous UMD standard of 4,539 set by Chris Parno at the 2009 NSIC indoors in Bemidji, Minn.

After the NSIC Multi Championships, Minnesota State has recorded 18 points and sits in first-place. Sophomore Nathan Hancock won the multi championship with a career-best 5,301 points and earning 10 points for MSU. Senior Tandy Juell took third-place with 5,078 points and earned six points, while senior Robert Gunderson earned two points with his 4,761 points.

Women Field: Junior Moriah Miller came in 10th-place at the multi championship with 3,034 points. Miller’s best finishes came in the high jump and shot put. She finished tied for second in the high jump with a final jump of 1.58-meters. Miller’s hurl of 10.68-meters in the shot put was good for fifth-place. Christina Erickson finished in 14th-place with a point total of 2,845. Erickson’s best finishes came in the long jump and the shot put. She finished in second-place in the shot put with a final throw of 10.73-meters and fifth-place in the long jump with a jump of 5.13-meters.
The Mavericks will be competing next at the University of Minnesota on Saturday February 16th before retuning home to compete in the NSIC Championship on Feb. 22 and 23.
MSU Moorhead
Men Field: Laquone Robinson (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Brooklyn Center HS) finished fourth in the men’s heptathlon at the NSIC Indoor Multi Event last weekend in Mankato, Minn. He won the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash as part of the weekend’s competition and finished with 5,036 points, just 42 away from third.
Men Track: Derek Bredy (Sr., Hoffman, Minn.) set new school records in the 200 meters and 400 meters during action at the Iowa State Classic. On Friday, he set a new school 400-meter record that stood for 29 years with a time of 47.95, placing him second in the event overall. It is the seventh-fastest 400-meter time in DII this season. He also set a new school 200-meter record (not adjusted for track size) with a time of 21.53 the next day, finishing third. Bredy is ranked second in the nation in the event.
Women Field: Heather Schultz (Sr., Dent, Minn. / Perham HS) was second in the shot put with a throw of 46-1 1/2 as she continued her stellar indoor season for the Dragons.
Women Track: Karlene Lorenz (So., Lisbon, N.D. / Lisbon HS) was second in the 600-meter run at the Bison Open on Saturday, finishing with a time of 1:39.81. She also was part of MSUM’s 4x400 relay that finished second with a time of 4:08.64.
Minot State
Women Track & Field: On the women’s side, 10 personal bests were recorded Saturday afternoon at the North Dakota State University Bison Open in Fargo, N.D.. DelRay Audet (Fr., Hurdles, Minot, N.D.) made a personal best in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.49 seconds. Allie Helterbran (Jr., Multi, Billings, Mont.) also had a solid performance in the long jump. Helterbran placed third overall at the Bison Open, jumping for a personal best 17 feet two inches. Abbey Aide (Jr., Pole Vault, Bottineau, N.D.) placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12 feet 1.5 inches.
Men Track & Field: On the men’s side,14 personal bests were recorded at the Bison Open, including Josh Sandy (So., Jumps, Velva, N.D.) in the 400 meter race (53.47 second) and triple jump (42 feet 3.5 inches). Teammate Tyler Flatland (So., Hurdles, Watford City, N.D.) also had a personal best in the 400 meters with a time of 50.55 seconds, placing fourth overall. Joel Cartwright (Fr., Distance, Great Falls, Mont.) recorded a personal best at the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:08.44.
Northern State
Women’s Track: Nicolia Edwards (Sr., Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew’s HS) finished fourth in both the 200 and 400 meter races at the NDSU Bison Open on Saturday. Edwards finished the 200 in 26.33 seconds the 400 in 59.21 seconds, both personal bests for the senior. She now stands eighth on the NSIC performance list in the 400 meters and 11th in the 200.
Women Field: Lindsey Fluharty (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn./Home School) finished seventh in the long jump and ninth in the 60 meter dash for the Wolves at Saturday’s NDSU Bison Open. Fluharty was seventh coming out of prelims in the 60 meters with a time of 8.11 seconds. She was ninth in the finals in 8.29 seconds. Fluharty’s seventh place mark of 5.17 meters (16 feet, 11.5 inches) tied for sixth in the field of 25, but lost on a tiebreaker.

Sioux Falls
USF track & field made the trek down to Sioux Center, Iowa this weekend to compete at the Dordt College Track Invite and the NSIC Multi Championships. The Cougars came away with three school records, two NCAA automatic qualifying standards and numerous NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
Women Field: Katlyn Sawtelle claimed runner-up honors in the women’s pentathlon at the NSIC multi-championships, in what was just her second time competing in the event. Sawtelle finished the pentathlon with a score of 3,480--breaking her own school record by 200 points. The result is also an NCAA “B” qualifying standard and ties Sawtelle for seventh in the nation.
Jazzelena Black continued to hop, bound and jump her way to the top of the medal stand with a record breaking, double-victory in the horizontal jumps at the Dordt College Invitational. She won the long jump with a leap of 18-11.25 (5.77m) and then uncorked a 38-9.5 (11.82m) to claim the triple jump title. Black was recognized as a top female performer and now owns the Dordt College meet records in both the long and triple jump. She currently holds the NSIC’s top marks for both the triple jump and long jump.
Men Track: Redshirt sophomore Bobby Brockmueller posted a pair of record-breaking performances to stand as the Cougars’ top performer in Sioux Center, Iowa. He clocked a 2:30.73 in the 1000m run, breaking the school record by .02 seconds en route to a runner-up finish. The result is also the second fastest time recorded during the 2012-13 NSIC indoor season. Brockmueller’s second record-breaking effort came when he teamed up with brother Billy Brockmueller, Kaleb Stevens and Blake Stevenson for the distance medley relay. The quartet won the event with a school record time of 10:09.24, shattering the previous record by nearly ten seconds. This time is the fastest run by an NSIC team this season and is a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Men’s Field: Rookie vaulter Jagger Gran improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark when he scaled a PR and NSIC-leading height of 16-1.75 (4.92m) at the Dordt College Invitational.
The Cougars will return to competition next Friday at the South Dakota Twilight Meet in Vermillion, S.D.
St. Cloud State
The St. Cloud State University Track & Field hosted their annual Van Nelson Open Saturday in the Halenbeck Fieldhouse. The meet kicked off with the unveiling of the National Champions and All-American banners with a ceremony to honor these alumni recipients. In the meet the Huskies earned 13 individual titles. This weekend the Huskies also had Riley Myers and Laure Olson compete in the NSIC Multi Sunday and Monday hosted by Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Women Track: Alicia Evans had a good performance this weekend at the Van Nelson Open, earning two-second place finishes in the 200m dash posting a time of 26.50 and in the 400m dash with a time of 58.72. Evans is also a member of the women’s 4x400m relay team that took second place in the meet.
Ellen Wikstrom took first in the 60m dash posting a time of 8.02. Nichelle Rubash first in the 800m run 2:32.37. Becky Schmidt earned a title in the 200m dash (25.86) with teammate Alicia Evans close behind in second place (26.50). Keely Rubash was another first place winner with her performance in the 3,000m run (10:51.42). Evans took second in the 400m dash with a time of 58.72. Wikstrom recorded a third place finish in the 60m hurdles (9.32) and Andrea Pfaff came in fourth (9.88). GaBrina Cornelious was third with a time of 8.28 in the 60m dash. The 3,000m run ended with Jenny Metzler placing second (11:14.90), Lindsay Stassen in fourth (12:02.43), and in fifth was Jessie Hubley (12:08.62). In the women’s high jump it was Kellan Flynn taking second with a height of 5-0.25. In the long jump it was Schmidt taking second with a distance of 17-7, while Salimah Muhammad (16-4.25) came in third and Taylor Rosenfeldt (15-11) finished fifth. In the women’s weight throw it was Stephanie Waletzko taking second with a throw of 42-10. Laure Olson competed in her second pentathlon of the season on Sunday at the NSIC Multi. Olson competed in the 60m hurdles (9.49), long jump (17-05.75), shot put (29-02.75), high jump (5-02.25), and the 800m run (2:35.75). In the overall pentathlon Olson finished in fourth place with 3,248 points.
Men Field: Joe Mooney’s performance was great this weekend taking the title in the high jump with a jump of 6-9, which is a national qualifying provisional mark and his best jump of his collegiate career thus far. This moves Mooney into second place in the conference standings in the high jump.
Dave Braaten performed his best yet in his collegiate career in the pole vault this weekend posting a first place finish and a national qualifying provisional height of 15-6.25. This puts Braaten in fourth place in the conference standings.
Men Track: George Kawalawu earned a title in the 60m dash this weekend with a national qualifying provisional time of 6.89, which puts him fourth place in the conference. Kawalawu continues to improve by cutting time off his 60m dash each and every meet.
JoVonte Suber earned a first place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 50.38. Rashad Cohen too first in the 60m hurdles posting a time of 8.68. George Kawalawu earned a title in the 60m dash with a national qualifying provisional time of 6.89, which puts him fourth place in the conference. Mammed Nurie was first in the 800m run (2:03.33) and Leon Cheneyon took first in the 200m dash 22.68. In the men’s field events it was Joe Mooney taking the title in the high jump with a jump of 6-9, which is a national qualifying provisional mark. Dustin McColley (6-7) was right behind Mooney with a second place finish in the men’s high jump, David Braaten won the men’s pole vault with a national qualifying provisional height of 15-6.25, and Connor Guidera took first in the triple jump with a distance of 41-7. Guidera also took third in the long jump posting a distance of 20-6.50. In the 400m Darryl Howard took third (53.01), while Brian Hervin came in fifth (54.01). Hervin also took second 23.63 in the 200m dash, while Steven Parker took fourth with a time of 24.01. Tendeh Brownell earned a second place finish (7.07) in the 60m dash, Brady Wilkerson fourth place (7.15), and Parker in fifth (7.19). In the 800m run it was Paul Greenwood recording a third place finish with a time of 2:05.84 and Paul Maile in fourth with a time of 2:09.25. Tom Mountain took second in the 3,000m run (9:09.46), while David Pieper rounded out the top five in fifth (10:02.03). Ryan Johnson earned a fourth place finish in the shot put (45-1) and third in the weight throw (49-6). Riley Myers competed in the first part of his second heptathlon of the season at the NSIC Multiperforming in the 60m dash (7.36), shot put (42-00.50), long jump (19-11.75), and the high jump (6-04). After day one Myers is in currently sitting in fifth place with 2,761 points.
St. Cloud State Track & Field will be back in action on Feb. 15-16 as they travel to the Snowshoe Open, which is hosted by the University of Minnesota. The meet will be held in the U of M Fieldhouse.
Wayne State
Men Field:- Bradley Wright (Senior, Ewing, NE) took fourth place in the weight throw with an NCAA Provisional Mark of 56’ 5 ¾” in the weight throw at the Concordia Invite.
Men Track:Zach Thomsen (Sophomore, Wayne, NE) was second in the 600 meter run in a time of 1:21.93, with a personal best time, at the Concordia Invite in Seward, NE. He is currently 2nd in the NSIC in the 600 meter run and first in the 800 meter run in the NSIC.
Women Field: Emily Wells (Junior, Albion, NE)hit a personal best mark of 58’ 9 1/2” in the weight throw at the Concordia Invite to place second to teammate Carly Fehringer. The mark places her 14th in NCAA Division II and 3rd in the NSIC. She is one of four WSC throwers currently ranked in the top 24 in the NCAA in the event.
Women Track: Lexi Guhl - (Junior, Omaha, NE) had a personal best time of 9.11 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles to place second in the event at the Concordia Invite.
Winona State
Women’s Track: Catherine Whitcomb (So, Shakopee, MN) anchored the Warrior’s 4x400m relay team to a time of 3:48.32 which currently stands 8th in NCAA II. Catherine split a 56.2s on her baton carry, pulling her team from third to winning the heat and placing 6th overall at the Iowa State Classic.
Women’s Field: Hannah Mueller (So, Cambridge, MN) improved on her best Long Jump of the season leaping 5.53m (18’ 1 ¾”) to win the SMU Cardinal Open Friday.
