Warriors Hold On To Record 73-68 Win Over MSU Moorhead

WINONA, Minn. – Taylor Cameron converted a traditional 3-point play with 35 seconds remaining and the Warriors converted on four late free throws as the No. 17 Winona State men’s basketball team held off MSU Moorhead 73-68 Saturday in Winona.

The Warriors saw a lead that reached as many as 18 points in the second half whittled away by the Dragons, with MSU Moorhead pulling to within four with two minutes remaining. That was when Cameron drove to the hoop, converting on a layup and drawing a foul to push the WSU advantage to seven, 70-63, with 35 seconds left.

MSU Moorhead responded by nailing a 3-pointer to draw to within four once again with 25 ticks left on the clock. Kellen Taylor hit a free throw and Xavier Humphrey added two more to help the Warriors hold on to their lead and preserve the victory.

The win moves Winona State’s record to 20-3 overall on the season and 14-2 in NSIC play. WSU has won its last 14 games, the fifth-longest win streak in school history.

Clayton Vette led the Warriors with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Vette scored at least 20 points in both Warrior wins this weekend and has reached the 20-point mark in 11 games this season. The Warrior senior now has 1,478 points in his career and moved into 12th place on the school’s all-time scoring list Saturday, passing former WSU guard and current Winona State assistant coach Tom Brown.

Cameron added ten points while passing out six assists. The junior also had a pair of blocked shots in the victorious effort.

Humphrey added nine points while Caleb Palkert chipped in eight and Grant Johnson scored seven.

Winona State will return to the court next weekend when it travels to St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.
