Warriors Strong In 8-1 Win Over St. Cloud State

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State tennis team opened its final weekend of regular season play with a commanding 8-1 victory over St. Cloud State Friday in Winona.

The victory over SCSU pulls the Warriors into second place in the NSIC standings with a 9-1 record, jumping the Huskies who are now 9-2. WSU is 14-5 overall on the season. St. Cloud is also ranked fifth in the NCAA Central Region rankings, giving WSU its first win over a regionally ranked team this season.

Winona State started its matchup with St. Cloud State by earning victories in all three doubles matches. Erin Kappers and Hannah Potter collected an 8-1 victory while Jessica Urban and Brianna Havelka posted an 8-2 win.

The Warriors continued their strong play in singles action, with Kappers winning her match 6-0, 6-1 and Brittney Freund adding a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Urban, Potter and Havelka also posted singles wins for the Warriors.

Winona State will close its regular season Saturday when it hosts Upper Iowa at 3:30 pm at the Winona Tennis Center.
