Minnesota State
#17 Jon Flattery (OF, 5-11, 190, Sr., L/L, Fort Dodge, Iowa / Iowa Central CC) was red-hot at the plate this past weekend turning in his best series in four years as a Maverick by going 8-for-16 from the plate with a double, three homeruns, eight runs scored and an astonishing 11 RBI. Flattery registered all three round-trippers, five runs and 10 RBI in MSU’s 32-11 romp over SMSU yesterday as the Mavericks swept the four-game series. The senior also produced a team-high 1.125 slugging percentage, .529 on-base percentage and 18 total bases.
#32 Jason Hoppe (RHP, 6-1, 165, Jr., R/R, Sauk Rapids, Minn. / Sauk Rapids) improved to 5-1 on the year by tossing a nine-inning complete-game shutout, his first of the season, in MSU’s 2-0 win over SMSU Sunday afternoon as the Mavericks swept the four-game set. No. 14 Minnesota State stretched its winning streak to nine games as it swept a four-game series over Southwest Minnesota State this past Sunday and Monday in Sioux City, Iowa to improve to 26-7 overall and 15-3 in the NSIC. The Mavericks claimed all four contests by margins of 15-3, 2-0, 32-11 and 9-7 as its 32 runs in game three were one shy of the program’s all-time record for a single game. Matt Magers is in his fifth season as skipper of the Mavericks and just one win shy of his 200th as he owns a 199-64 (.754) overall record.

Minot State
#19 Connor Moughtin (C, 5-11, R/R, Jr., Victoria, British Columbia / Lambrick Park Secondary School) Moughtin played a crucial role in Minot State’s two wins over Upper Iowa University. In game one, he used his defense, calling and catching a complete game win from teammate Cole Stober (Sr., P, Hays, Alberta). At the plate he also got on base twice with a walk and hit-by-pitch. In game two, his bat came alive, as he went three-for-four with an RBI. Moughtin hit .600 for the weekend and went 3-for-3 in throwing out baserunners.
#15 Cole Stober (P, 6-2, R/R, Sr., Hays, Alberta / Vauxhall High School) Stober earned his first win of the season, and the Beavers’ first win Northern Sun with a complete game shutout over Upper Iowa University Saturday afternoon. He allowed just one earned run over seven innings while striking out six batters. Stober did no surrender a walk in the win as he helped the Minot State to go 2-0 on the weekend.
Minot State picked up their first two wins in Northern Sun play as they defeated Upper Iowa University 6-2, 5-4 in Fayette, Iowa on Saturday afternoon. In game one, Cole Stober (Sr., P, Hays, Alberta) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched a six strikeout complete game. He allowed just one earned run while giving up no walks to Peacock batters. Mitch Olson (Sr., 1B, Deloraine, Manitoba) led the Beaver offense going 3-for-3 at the plate. Jordan Gilmour (Sr., OF, Gatineau, Quebec) also had a solid game, scoring three runs from the leadoff position. In game two, a UIU balk and a timely defensive shift led Minot State to a 5-4 win. After Upper Iowa balked in Shayne Court (Sr., OF, Red Deer, Alberta) in the bottom of the eighth, the Beavers perfectly execute a defensive wheel play to force out the potential tying run. With runners on first and second with no outs, the Peacocks bunted down the third baseline to a charging A.J. Begay (Jr. 3B, Salt Lake City, Utah) while simultaneously, Sean Arbaut  (Jr., INF, Tehachapi, Calif.) ran across the diamond to the third base to receive the throw from Begay and get the lead runner. The Beavers did not play Sunday due to poor weather conditions.

Northern State
Kassidy Gaines (P, 6-5, 180, Jr., R/R, Twin Falls Idaho/Twin Falls HS/Grays Harbor CC) gave the Wolves two solid outings last weekend, picking up a win last Monday as part of NSU’s 4-game sweep over Minnesota Crookston.  He also went 6+ innings on Sunday in a heartbreaker of a loss to Augustana in a neutral-site setting.  Despite taking the loss, Gaines did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning and did not face a fourth batter until the sixth.  Gaines went 11.1 innings on the week, allowing four earned runs and striking out six while giving up just one extra-base hit.
Robbie Rocamora (1B/P, 5-11, 205, Jr., R/R, San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) went .450 from the plate over the past six games, going 9-for-20 from the plate with two doubles and six runs driven in.  Rocamora, who started all six games at first base and made a relief pitching appearance on the mound, scored five runs himself and came through with a pair of clutch two-out, RBI hits in the series with Augustana.
The Northern State baseball doubleheader at Minot State, originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.  A late-season winter storm rolled through the region last weekend, leaving field conditions in both Minot and Aberdeen unplayable. Next up on the 2013 slate for the Wolves is a 4-game weekend series with Wayne State.  Times and location for those games have not yet been determined.

Sioux Falls
USF (10-18, 5-9 NSIC) was idle last week due to severe weather, as the ice storms canceled a midweek twinbill with Northern State along with the Cougars’ weekend series versus the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Cougars will return to the field today against Southwest Minnesota State for a relocated double-header that will be held at North High School in Sioux City, Iowa.

SMSU
Senior outfielder Kyle Young (Scandia, Minn.) batted .400 (6 for 15)  with one home run, one double and four RBIs during SMSU’s four-game series versus Minnesota State.  He recorded 10 total bases for a .667 slugging percentage, scored three runs and had a .471 on-base percentage.  Young leads SMSU with a .424 average and is also the team-leader in both doubles (9), home runs (4) and multi-hit games (14).
Freshman pitcher Travis McGlauflin (Sioux City, Iowa) had his best outing of his rookie season on Sunday in a loss to Minnesota State.  The right-hander tossed a career-high eight innings, allowing just two runs and four hits with four strikeouts and one walk in a 2-0 loss to the Mavericks.

St. Cloud State
Brian Hansen (Sr., Outfielder, Cold Spring, Minn. / ROCORI HS) batted .429 in three games played in Missouri on April 14-15.  In action at Truman State on April 14, Hansen went 2-for-2 in game one of the doubleheader.  In the first contest, Hansen had a double and two RBIs along with one walk in the 2-1 win for the Huskies.  He also had two putouts in the outfield for SCSU.  In game two,  Hansen had one run, one putout and two walks in a 7-5 loss to Truman State.  To end the trip south, SCSU lost a tough 5-3 decision at Missouri Western, the top ranked team in the region in the latest NCBWA poll.  Hansen had three walks in the game and also had a solo home run in the game for the Huskies.  On the week, Hansen batted .429 with a total of three hits, one double, one homer, three RBIs, six walks and four putouts for the 22-4 Huskies.

The Huskies ventured south to Missouri for a weekend series at Truman State and Missouri Western on April 14-15.  The games were arranged since the Huskies lost league games last week against Southwestern Minnesota State and Winona State due to the extension of winter in the North Star state.  SCSU split the twinbill at Truman with a 2-1 victory and a 7-5 loss.  Kyle Fischer was the pitcher of record for the Huskies in the victory for SCSU, while Nick Maiers suffered the loss to SCSU in game two.  Fischer improved his season mark to 7-1 with the win.  On April 15, the Huskies lost a tough 5-3 decision against Missouri Western in a battle of regional heavyweights.  In the latest NCBWA, the gold standard of Division II regional polls, SCSU was ranked second and Missouri Western was ranked first on April 15.  SCSU is slated to continue its season with games at Concordia, St. Paul on April 20-21.  Of note, the Huskies have not played a home game at Faber Field in 2013.  Junior Garrett Fischer is leading the Huskies this spring with a .429 batting rate, which includes a team leading 30 hits.  Senior Sean Borman leads SCSU this spring with 21 RBIs, two homers and 49 total bases.

Upper Iowa
Upper Iowa lost four games this week due to weather and two more on the field dropping to 10-11 on the season and 2-2 in the NSIC.  After a midweek double header with Minnesota State was cancelled, the Peacocks and Beavers of Minot State got together for the first two contests of a four-game weekend series in Fayette.  Minot State got a complete game from Cole Stober in game one as they converted four hits, three walks and four hit batsmen into six runs for the 6-2 win.  The Beavers rallied from a 3-1 deficit in game two to post a 5-4 victory.  The teams combined for 26 hits, but they also teamed up to leave 23 runners on base.  On Sunday, the teams reached the top of the second inning with UIU leading 2-1 before rain and field conditions forced the umpires to call the game.  Eric Anderson (4-1) and Martin Valdez (3-1) both suffered losses in Saturday’s action.
The Peacocks head into this week with six more games that have been moved to Fayette.  Upper Iowa will host Augustana on Tuesday and then welcome in the Beavers of Bemidji State on Saturday and Sunday.  All six games were originally scheduled to be played on the road, but weather has forced the action to Fayette.

Wayne State
CJ Nolen, a 6-0 180 pound junior first baseman from Sioux City, Iowa (SC West HS), hit .421 during the week in six games going 8 for 19 at the plate with a team-high five runs scored as WSC posted a 4-2 mark during the week.  Nolen had three multi-hit games, highlighted by a 3 for 4 effort in a 4-2 win over Minnesota Duluth on Sunday night in Omaha.  Nolen also went 2 for 3 with two runs scored in a 7-3 win at Mary Thursday and was 2 for 4 with a run scored along with a triple in Monday’s 6-4 setback to UMD in Omaha.
Tadd Johansen, a 6-4 180 pound senior from Elkhorn, Nebraska, stayed unbeaten on the season Sunday with his third complete game of the year, a 4-2 win over Minnesota Duluth in Omaha.  The lefthander gave up five hits and two runs while striking out four without issuing a walk.  For the season, Johansen is now 7-0 on the season with a 1.28 ERA.

Winona State
The Winona State baseball team had its four game series with St. Cloud State cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
