WAYNE, Neb. - Senior right handed pitcher
Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) threw her ninth and 10th shutouts including her fourth one-hitter of the season to lead Concordia-St. Paul (25-9, 12-4 NSIC) to a pair of 1-0 wins at Wayne State (23-9, 14-4) on Saturday afternoon. Kluever tossed a
1-hitter in the first game and scattered
three singles and a double in the second game.
Kluever entered this week of games sixth in the NCAA with eight shutouts, adding a pair to her total today while holding Wayne State to five hits over 14.0 innings. She issued just one walk in each game and combined for 15 strikeouts in the doubleheader. She is now 16-5 with the back-to-back wins.
GAME 1: Concordia 1, Wayne State 0
Kluever's only blemish was a one-out bunt single to third base in the fifth inning. She also issued one walk, and one runner reached on an error. She struck out six to improve to 15-5.
Concordia scored the game's only run in the second inning.
Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) doubled and would come across to score on
Lindsey Kamleiter's (Lakeville, Minn.) sacrifice fly. Larsen was 2-2 with a pair of doubles in the game. She's now tied for the team lead in doubles with 11.
Concordia only had three total hits off Wayne State starting pitcher Sara Scheffert, who fell to 12-4. Scheffert went the distance (6.0 IP), walking three and striking out four.
GAME 2: Concordia 1, Wayne State 0
In the second game, the Wildcats were blanked again by Kluever. She finished stong, retiring the final nine batters she faced in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings after a leadoff single in the fifth.
She pitched out of a major jam in the fourth inning, allowing a leadoff double down the right field line followed by a single to left field. But the Wildcats left runners on the corners as Kluever forced a pop-out and a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
All four hits against Kluever were with no outs in the respective inning.
Concordia scored its only run in the third inning as Alicia Meiser led off with an infield single to short and
Teona Zepeda (Woodbury, Minn.) followed with a bunt single to third. With one out and runners on first and second,
Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) delivered her team-leading 12th double of the year to score Meiser for the 1-0 lead.
The double re-established the team-high for M.Feuerbach as Larsen had tied her after the first game of the day with her pair of doubles.
Zepeda was 3-3 at the plate, also adding a double.
The loss was charged to Kelcie Bormann, falling to 6-4 with six innings, allowing six hits, a walk and striking out nine.
The Golden Bears head to Sioux Falls, S.D. tomorrow for a doubleheader against Augustana at noon and 2 p.m. The Vikings fell to 12-5 in the conference by losing game one to Minnesota State today, with the second game in progress.
