Game 1 - Wayne State 3 Bemidji State 2 (9 inn.)

Game 2 - Wayne State 2 Bemidji State 0

Sophomore third baseman Jordan King went 3 for 7 at the plate with three runs scored to help the Wayne State College softball team sweep Bemidji State 3-2 in nine innings and 2-0 in Northern Sun Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.   The games were originally scheduled to be played in Bemidji but due to unplayable conditions the doubleheader was moved to Wayne.  WSC has now won nine straight games, improving to 18-6 overall and 9-1 in the NSIC while Bemidji State is now 7-20 and 1-9 in league play.
In the opener, Kaiti Williams produced an RBI single that scored Jordan King with the game-winning run to give the Wildcats a 3-2 win in nine innings.
WSC opened the scoring in the first when Kylee Simpson led off the game with a single and scored on Kelcie Bormann’s sacrifice fly to right field for a 1-0 lead.  The ‘Cats made it 2-0 in the third when King singled and later scored on a wild pitch.  Bemidji State then evened the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and the scored stayed that way until the top of the ninth inning.
King opened the top of the ninth with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a Kelcie Bormann ground out before crossing the plate on Williams’ single to left to give WSC a 3-2 lead.
WSC outhit Bemidji State 7-3 in the first game as King finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored.  Simpson, Bormann, Williams, Vicki Nielsen and Michelle Thille each singled in the win.
Freshman Cassy Miller (3-0) pitched six standout innings of relief to get the win, allowing just one hit while fanning nine Beaver hitters to earn the pitching win in relief of starter Kelcie Bormann.
The second game saw WSC score two runs in the first inning and Sara Scheffert fired her second complete game shutout of the season to help the Wildcats in a 2-0 win in the second game to complete the sweep.
In the first inning, King singled up the middle and Bormann walked with both players scoring on Nielsen’s double down the left field line for an early 2-0 Wildcat advantage.
That’s all the run support Sara Scheffert would need as the sophomore from Lincoln Southeast tossed a five-hit shutout with two strikeouts and no walks while improving her record to 9-3.
WSC made the most of their four hits in the second game while Bemidji State had five.  Nielsen had a two-run double while King singled and scored one run.  Lexie Loos and Megan Hagemann also singled for WSC.
Wayne State will be in action against Sunday as Minnesota Crookston will visit Wayne for a NSIC doubleheader beginning at noon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.
