Mankato, Minn. --- No. 18 Minnesota State University fell to Winona State in the first contest of the day, by a score of 6-5, but rallied in the second contest against No. 2 Southeastern Oklahoma State keeping its season alive with an 8-0 victory.
The Mavericks struck first against the Warriors as the junior class led the way beginning with catcher
Lindsay Erickson recording the single, followed by second basemen
Samantha Holien who reached on a fielder’s choice. The duo would be batted in by outfielder
Anna Cole who recorded a two-run double, giving MSU a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Junior outfielder
Eryn Edgerton tallied a double in the top of the second inning and would eventually be batted in by senior outfielder
Lauryn Morris, pushing the Maverick lead to 3-0 after the top half of the second inning.
The Warriors would post six runs on four hits and one Maverick error in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 6-3 lead after two complete innings.
Senior designated player
Jenna Peterson got the Maverick offense going in the top of the fourth inning, reaching on a fielder’s choice, Peterson would steal second and eventually be batted in by freshman first basemen
Tatum Klein. Klein would score off of a throwing error by the Winona State third basemen, cutting the Warrior lead to 6-5.
The one-run deficit proved to be insurmountable as the Mavericks posted five runs on seven hits but committed three errors. Morris led the MSU offense with two hits and two RBI in four at-bats.
Senior pitcher
Courtney McKelvogue was tagged with the loss, she gave up six runs (one earned) on four hits, walked two batters and struck out one.
Minnesota State responded with an 8-0 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State in an elimination game.
The Mavericks got things going in the first inning of the second game as Erickson started a two-out rally, Erickson was hit by a pitch. Junior second basemen
Samantha Holien then recorded a double and advanced to third base on the play, scoring Erickson. Cole then recorded a two run dinger off the scoreboard, giving MSU a 3-0 lead after the top half of the first inning.
Cole continued her hot streak at the plate recording a triple, Peterson would then record the RBI single pushing the Maverick lead to 4-0 after the top half of the fourth inning.
Senior
Abby Sonner recorded a single in the top of the fourth inning and would score on a first and third situation, Holien would also score in the inning with the RBI credited to junior
Kelly Wood, extending the MSU lead to 6-0.
The Mavericks would post an additional two runs in the seventh inning as both Holien and Erickson crossed home plate bringing the score to 8-0 which proved to be the final score.
McKelvogue went all seven innings, earning her 25
th win of the season. She held the Savage Storm scoreless, only allowing two hits while striking out five batters.
Cole led the Mavericks from the dish, she recorded two runs on two hits with two RBI, including a home run and a triple. Collectively MSU posted eight runs on 12 hits and did not commit an error.
MSU will play Winona State at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning in the NCAA Division II sub-regional championship. The Mavericks must defeat the Warriors twice to earn the sub-region crown
