Warriors Fall To Central Oklahoma 5-4 In NCAA Super Regional

EDMOND, Okla. – The Winona State softball team had the potential winning run at first base in the bottom of the seventh inning but couldn’t push a run across, falling to Central Oklahoma 5-4 Saturday in the NCAA Division II Super Regional Championship in Edmond, Okla.

Trailing by one entering the final frame, Morgan Lintz walked and Britt Stewart singled to put both the potential tying and winning run on base. UCO pitcher Kalynn Schrock was able to get Jenny Nelson to fly out to left field to end the Warrior threat.

The victory gives Central Oklahoma the NCAA Central Region Championship having also won the opening game of the best-of-three series 5-2 Friday night.

The Warriors fell behind early on Saturday, trailing 4-0 before mounting a furious comeback.

UCO loaded the bases in the second inning but could only push one run across on a RBI groundout to score their first run of the ballgame. The team added three more in the top of the third to move its lead to 4-0.

Winona State got two runs back in the bottom of the third, with Jordan Petersen and Brooke Piotrowski singling to put a pair of runners on. Ashley Walker followed with a two-run double to left-center, plating both Warrior base runners and making the score 4-2.

The Warriors continued their charge in the bottom of the fourth, with Stewart leading off the inning with a monstrous home run off the top of the scoreboard in left field. Nelson followed by being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Jordan Petersen. The throw trying to get Nelson at third was wild, allowing the WSU junior to score and tie the game at four.

Central Oklahoma retook the lead in the top of the fifth, getting a pair of singles to put runners in scoring position before Hayley Hudson singled to make the score 5-4.

Stewart was outstanding in her final game as a Warrior, going 3-for-3 at the plate, including her massive solo homer in the fourth. Walker and Petersen each collected two hits while Piotrowski added a single of her own.

Walker’s two RBI in the third inning give her 63 on the season, upping the school record for runs batted in she set last weekend. The Warrior junior also threw a complete game in the circle and ends her season with a 20-4 record.

Winona State ends its season with a 37-14 overall record, its 12th consecutive campaign with at least 35 victories. WSU’s NCAA Division II Super Regional appearance was its second in program history, joining the 2009 team.
