NSIC Championships Set for May 10-11 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The 2013 NSIC Outdoor Championships are set to take place on Fri.-Sat., May 10-11 in Sioux Falls, S.D. at Howard Wood Track - hosted by Augustana College. For a full schedule of events see below.
NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Minnesota State senior Grant Luer (Menomonie, Wis.) automatically qualified for the 2013 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships when he took the crown in the discus throw at the Minnesota State Twilight last Tuesday night. Luer’s throw of 55.84 meters just edged the auto mark of 55.63 and is the fifth furthest in the nation this season.
NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week:
Minnesota Duluth’s Chris Wilson (So., Plymouth, Minn.) won his first 800-meter title as a collegian and was among a handful of University of Minnesota Duluth men who set personal bests at the two-day Meet of the UnSaintly held on the campus of Hamline University in St. Paul. Wilson led virtually from wire-to-wire and topped the 36-runner field with a time of 1:53.80, the fastest men’s 800m time in the NSIC this season.
NSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week:
Sioux Falls’ Brigitte Gross (R-Jr., Alexandria, S.D.) cleared 13-5.75 (4.11m) to earn the women’s pole vault title and break the school record which she previously set in 2011. Her record-setting clearance Friday ranks fourth in the NCAA DII this season and surpassed the NCAA automatic qualifiying height of 3.95m.
NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week:
University of Mary’s Janet Johnson surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 100 meter hurdles at the NDSU Tune-Up meet In Fargo, ND, on May 3. Johnson cleared the barriers in 13.95, nearly half a second below the provisional qualifying time of 14.40.
NSIC Team Notes
Augustana
Augustana concluded a busy week with a pair of events. The Vikings traveled to Mankato, Minn. for the Minnesota State Twilight Open before battling poor weather in their final regular season meet at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls. The Vikings are ready to host the NSIC Track and Field Championships this weekend with hopes of qualifying more athletes for the NCAA Championships.
Women’s Track: Runa Falch (Distance, Sr. Steinkjer, Norway) set the fastest time in the NSIC with her provisionally-qualifying 5,000-meter time at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. Falch crossed the line first with a time of 17:11.71 to overtake teammate Kristin Brondbo for the NSIC lead.
Women’s Field: Kristi Porter (Throws, Fr., Edgemont, S.D.) took the first place at the MSU Twilight in the women’s javelin throw narrowly missing a provisional qualifying mark. Porter’s best toss of 39.27 meters (128’ 8”) put her atop the leaderboard, but left her just 0.73 meters shy of a qualifying mark. Porter also took second in the javelin throw at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays with a 38.15-meter toss. Porter’s throw at the MSU Twilight ranks her fifth in the NSIC.
Men’s Track: Ryan Heuer (Sprints/Hurdles, Fr., Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont HS) grabbed two event wins and a total of three top-four finishes. At the MSU Twilight meet, Heuer won both the 400-meter dash (51.71 seconds) and 110-meter hurdles (15.63 seconds). Heuer recorded the eighth-fastest time in the NSIC in the 110-hurdles (15.19 seconds) after taking fourth place, second among Division II competitors, at the Howard Wood Relays.
Men’s Field: Zach Feil (Jumps, Fr., Watertown, S.D./ Great Plains Lutheran HS) won the triple jump at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays and tallied two more top-three finishes to start the week. Feil’s best triple jump mark of 13.53 meters (44’ 4.75”) won the event and set a collegiate best. Feil also finished second in the triple jump at the MSU Twilight Open and third in the high jump.
Bemidji State
Women Track: Taylor Sautbine (Sr., Tamarack, Minn), Tina Larson (Sr., Morris, Minn.) and Ashley Larva (Fr., Floodwood, Minn.) each won event titles as the Bemidji State University track and field team collected five first-place finishes at the Concordia College Spite the Flood Meet Saturday in Moorhead, Minn. Sautbine led all BSU competitors logging a pair of individual first-place finishes and was a part of the Beavers’ school-record 100-meter title team (48.49). The senior’s individual victories came in the 100- and 200-meter dash races. She broke the tape in 12.56 in the 100-meter race and her 25.86 was just off her season-best time in the 200. Fellow senior and 4x100-meter relay teammate Larva clocked a 14.95 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to capture the event title, while Larson won the 1,500-meter run, coming within 0.29 seconds from a 23-year-old school record (4:46.80), crossing the finish line in a season-best 4:47.09 to claim first-place. Sara Melom (Fr., Dawson, Minn.) and Tia Lindberg (So., Chisholm, Minn.) teamed up with Larva and Sautbine for the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet not only earned first place in the race, edging the field by nearly two seconds, they shaved 0.26 from a school record established last spring. In addition, Melom finished just behind Sautbine’s 200-meter pace, clocking a 26.44 to place second.
Concordia-St. Paul
Men’s Track: Nic Cass finished in fourth out of 39 in the 1500 meter run at Meet of the Unsaintly at Hamline University, setting a personal record with a time of 3:58.30
Men’s Field: Nate Thienes led the Golden Bears in three throwing events by placing third in all three at Meet of the Unsaintly at Hamline University with a 14.16m throw in the shot put (16), 44.04m in the discus (19) and 45.28m in the hammer (26).
Women Track: Brittany Dohmen led the Golden Bears by finishing in third out of 34 in the 400 meter dash at Meet of the Unsaintly at Hamline University with a time of 58.82.
Women Field: Jatonna Freeman-Andrews was the top thrower for the Golden Bears in two events, finishing ninth of 23 in the shot put with a mark of 11.29m, and finishing 12th out of 39 in the hammer with a personal record of 42.61m.
University of Mary
Men Track: Tracy Lide (Sprinter, Sr., Las Vegas, NV) was a double winner at the North Dakota State Tune Up in Fargom ND, on Friday, May 3. The senior from Las Vegas won the 100 meter dash in 10.67 seconds and then came back to blaze through the 200 meter dash in 21.75 seconds… Shaun Henderson (Distance, Jr., Huron, SD) broke his own school record in the 3,000 meter run, covering the distance in 8:51.21.
Women Track: In the final meet before the 16th ranked University of Mary women’s outdoor track & field team prepares to defend its conference title, Janet Johnson and Melissa Walker highlighted the Marauders efforts at the NDSU Tune-Up meet In Fargo, ND, on May 3. Both Johnson and Walker reached NCAA provisional qualifying standards in the 100 meter hurdles. Johnson cleared the barriers in 13.95 and Walker was right behind her fellow Kingston, Jamaica native at 14.17.
Minnesota Duluth
Women Track & Field: Junior Kelsi Ring was the 100-meter hurdle champion, crossing the finish line in 14.81 while the 400-meter crown went to Bulldog junior Amelia Maher (1:04.85). The 4 x 400-meter relay team of senior Kirsten Bjork, junior Kate Hassing, freshman Madeline Schaeffer and sophomore Tatum Garrity also came away with a first-place performance, winning with a time of 4:00.08. Freshman pole vaulter Kayla Wiltrout (12’-00.75”) and senior long jumper Dana Roach (16’-05.75”) both placed second in their respective events and Ring (triple jump; 35’-09.75”), Schaeffer (400-meter hurdles; 1:05.62) and sophomore Kate Ayers (discus; 136’-07”) all finished third.

Wilson, a sophomore from Plymouth, Minn., led virtually from wire-to-wire and topped the 36-runner field with a time of 1:53.80 while teammate Scott Urban, a sophomore, wound up third at 1:56.01.
Minnesota State
Minnesota State traveled to Saint Paul to take part in the Meet of the UnSaintly on Friday and Saturday.
Men Field: Senior Grant Luer took the crown in the discus throw while junior Chris Reed took the top spots in the hammer throw and the shot put. Luer’s throw of 51.96-meters in the discus throw won him the title in the discus throw. Reed finished just behind him with a throw of 48.99-meters. Reed took the top spot in the hammer throw with a toss of 56.63-meters while his toss of 18.71-meters in the shot put placed him in first. Reed’s throw in the shot put automatically qualified him for the NCAA meet and is the second-highest throw in the nation.
Men Track: The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of freshman Justin Mcmurty, sophomore Alexander Schoneberger, senior Edward Van Pelt, and sophomore Dan Guelle took second-place with a time of 3:23.60.
Women Track: Danielle Jones took first in the 100m as she crossed the finish line with a time of 12.26. She also took third in the 200m dash with a time of 25.39.
Women Field: Sophomore Anna Veroeven also finished in first-place in the triple jump with a jump of 11.83-meters. In the Javelin throw, sophomore Madison Alexander came in second-place with a throw of 33.34-meters.
MSU Moorhead
Men Field: Ryan Barnes (Sr., High Jump, Brainerd, Minn. / Brainerd HS) capped off a strong week with a win in the college men’s high jump at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D. Barnes won the event with a height of 6-6. He enters this week’s NSIC Outdoor Championships ranked second in the conference in the event.
Men Track: Laquone Robinson (Sr., Sprints/Hurdles, Minneapolis, Minn. / Brooklyn Center) had a season-best run of 14.81 to take third in the men’s 110-meter hurdles at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D. That time ranks him third in the conference in that event.
Women Track: Alissa Mears (Fr., Mid-Distance, West Fargo, N.D. / West Fargo HS) had a strong run in winning the college division 800 meters at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D. Mears won with a personal-best time of 2:16.76, a time that is ranked seventh in the NSIC this season heading into this weekend’s outdoor championships.
Women Field: Heather Schultz (Sr., Throws, Dent, Minn. / Perham HS) won the hammer throw at Concordia’s Spite the Flood Meet on Saturday. Competing in rainy and cold conditions, Schultz fired a toss of 159-4 to win the event. She was also third in the shot put.
Minot State
Men Track: Brandon Velasquez (Sr., Distance, Chula Vista, Calif.) placed first in the 5,000 meter run with an impressive time of 16:02. Velasquez also took second in the 1,500 meter run. Tyler Flatland (So., Hurdles, Watford City, N.D.) took second place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.65 seconds.
Men’s Field: Kirk Capdeville (So., Pole Vault, Hinsdale, Mont.) took home the title in the men’s pole vault, clearing a height of over 15 feet six inches. This marks the second time this outdoor season Capdeville has hit the NCAA Division II Provisional Mark. Greg Groesback (So., Jumps, North pole, Alaska) placed first the in the long jump. He jumped over 20 feet and nine inches.
Women Track: Sienna Dailey (So., Sprints, Glasgow, Mont.) placed third in the 100 meter dash with a final time of 12.92 seconds. Kara Kuntz (So., Distance, Voltaire, N.D.) took second place in the 800 meter run with a time of two minutes 25.61 seconds. Also individually, freshman DelRay Audet (Hurdles, Minot, N.D.) placed second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.12 seconds. The Minot State women’s relays also had a great showing placing first in the 4x400 relay and second in the 4x100 relay.
Women Field: Abbey Aide (Jr., Pole Vault, Bottineau, N.D.).for the second consecutive week, broke her own school record in the women’s pole vault. She cleared a height of 12 feet 6.25 inches on her way to a first place finish at the Concordia College Spite the Flood Meet in Moorhead, Minn. Aide improved her national ranking, moving up the No. 9 spot in all NCAA Division II.
Northern State
Men Track: Mark Gilkerson (Jr., Blaine, Minn./Park Center HS) posted a time of 1:56.31 in the feature 800 meters race at last weekend’s Howard Wood Relays. That effort put him third in the event and second amongst Division II competitors. Gilkerson ranks in the NSIC’s top ten in that event.
Men Field: Devin Olson’s (So., Wishek, N.D./Wishek HS) mark of 51.10 meters (167 feet, 8 inches) in the javelin throw, while not a season best performance, was good for second place at the Howard Wood Relays. A sophomore, Olson was the top Division II performer in that event and heads into NSIC Championships week ranked seventh in the league.
Women Track: Sami Smith (So., Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS) also turned in a season-best effort in the 800 meters at the Howard Wood Relays. Smith earned a second place finish in the field, crossing in 2:17.61. That time moves Smith into the Top 10 on the NSIC performance list.
Women Field: Lindsey Fluharty (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn./Home School) turned in one of her strongest meets of the season at the Howard Wood Relays, winning the long jump and finishing second in the 100-meter dash. Fluharty’s mark of 5.34 meters (17 feet, 6.25 inches) ties her for 11th on the NSIC performance list. She was also a member of NSU’s 4x100-meter relay squad that finished second. The relay time of 47.60 was just one-hundredth of a second off the NSU school record, which is held by the same foursome (Fluharty, Nicolia Edwards, Jill Schaefer and Maria Franker) that ran on Friday. All four athletes are seniors.
Sioux Falls
Sioux Falls track and field competed at Howard Wood Relays May 3-4.
Men Field: Jordan Bents (So., Worthington, Minn.) broke the school record in the hammer throw for the second straight week. His heave of 168-4 (51.30m) was good for third place. Bents’ mark in the hammer throw ranks third in the NSIC. He also finished third overall in the shot put at Howard Wood where he recorded a toss of 51-11.75 (15.84m).
Men Track: Billy Brockmueller (RSo., Brandon, S.D.) outkicked the competition for a first place (14:52.77) finish in the 5000m run. His time was also a program best, and gives Billy the third-fastest time in the NSIC entering the conference meet this weekend.

Women Track: Kendra Knight (RJr., Mitchell, S.D.) claimed second in the women’s 400m dash with a time of 56.59. She heads into the NSIC Championships with the second-quickest time in NSIC this season.
St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State University track & field team competed at the Meet of the UnSaintly this weekend, which was hosted by Hamline University. The Huskies earned a multiple individual titles this weekend. Kellan Flynn recorded a first place finish in the high jump posting a personal best mark of 5-05.00, Becky Schmidt in the long jump posting a mark of 18-04.25, Brady Wilkerson in the 200m dash with a personal best time of 22.16, and David Braaten in the pole vault hitting a personal best and a national provisional mark of 16-02.00. SCSU also earned a title in the men’s 4x100m relay posting a time of 42.87 with Tendeh Brownell, George Kawalawu, Jackson Walter, and Brady Wilkerson.
Men Track/George Kawalawu posted a second place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 10.93, while teammates Tendeh Brownell (11.11) took fifth and Brian Hervin (11.44) came in 10th. Hervin also recorded a sixth place finish in the 200m dash with a personal best time of 23.21. SCSU’s Walters finished third in the 110m hurdles for a time of 15.38. In the 400m hurdles Rashad Cohen posted a time of 56.88 for a fifth place finish. In the men’s field events it was Joe Mooney tying for second (6-06.75) and Dustin McColley tying for fourth (6-06.75) in the high jump. Ryan Johnson took second place posting a personal best mark of 169-05 in the hammer throw.
Men Field: David Braaten (Sr., Cedar, Minn.) earned a first place finish in the pole vault hitting a personal best and improving his national provisional qualifying mark of 16-02.00 at the Meet of the UnSaintly this past weekend. Braaten has continued to improve his marks this season after multiple third place finishes in previous meets.
Women Track: Ellen Wikstrom recorded a fifth place finish in the 200m dash posting a time of 25.68 to beat 10 other NSIC competitors. Freshman Laure Olson also earned a fifth place finish defeating six NSIC athletes with a time of 1:07.25 in the 400m hurdles. In the women’s 4x100m relay the Huskies took third posting a season best time of 48.79. The team consisted of Wikstrom, Schmidt, GaBrina Cornelious, and Evans.
St. Cloud State will be back in action on May 10-11 as they compete in the NSIC Outdoor Championships hosted by Sioux Falls.
Wayne State
Men Field: Jon Williams - (Sophomore, Glenwood, Iowa) placed 2nd in the javelin throw at the UNL Invitational with a best
throw of 171’ 5”. He is currently ranked 5th in the NSIC with a best throw of 174’ 2”.
Men Track: Mike King - (Junior, Omaha, Nebraska) -placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash with a lifetime best of 22.32 seconds at the UNL Invitational on Sunday in Lincoln, NE.
Women Field: Morgan Swanson - (Sophomore, Omaha, Nebraska) -jumped to a mark of 16’ 7 3/4” in the long jump to place 3rd in the event. She also went 33’ 8 1/2” in the triple jump to place 7th in the triple jump at the UNL Invitational.
Women Track: Lexi Guhl - (Junior, Omaha, Nebraska) ran a personal best time of 15.35 seconds to take 8th place against a strong field of DI athletes at the UNL Invitational.
Winona State
The Winona State track and field team made its final preparations for the postseason Saturday with an outstanding showing at the Wisconsin Open in Madison. The Warriors won three events while also recording seven NCAA Division II Outdoor Championship provisional qualifying marks in four different events. The meet also served as the Warriors’ final tune-up before beginning postseason play at the NSIC Championship next weekend.
Women Track: Catherine Whitcomb (So, Shakopee, MN) won the 400m at the University of Wisconsin Open on Saturday in a time of 57.51 seconds.
Women Field: Hannah Mueller (So, Cambridge, MN) won the Long Jump at the University of Wisconsin Open on Saturday with a leap of 5.79m (19’). A pair of provisional marks were also earned by WSU in the discus, with Shanai Guider finishing fourth with a throw of 47.50 meters and Moenkedick placing fifth with a toss of 44.89 meters. Alyssa Rausch rounded out the Warriors’ collection of provisional marks, posting a throw of 13.47 meters to finish sixth in the shot put.
