Senior forward
Dani Potter scored three goals as her University of Minnesota Duluth women's soccer team opened NSIC play with a 4-1 road victory over St. Cloud State University on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs held the offensive advantage in the first half with 12 shots in the frame. Potter got the scoring started in the 24th minute with an unassisted tally. Just past the 34-minute mark, junior forward
Maureen Stormont would come back with a score of her own to put UMD up 2-0 with assists from juniors
Katie Schneider and
Megan Helberg. Sophomore goalkeeper
Marissa Rosa stopped all three shots she faced in the period to allow the Bulldogs to take their lead to the break.
St. Cloud State got on the board just five minutes into the second half as Kara Dahlmen slipped her first of the season past UMD's defense. The first-half scorers led the offensive charge back down the field, as Potter netted her third and fourth goals of the season, each with an assist by Stormont in the 54th (with an additional helper from
Sally Stromme) and 64th minutes. The Bulldogs added six shots in the second frame to finish with 18 overall (nine on net). Rosa finished with those three saves on four St. Cloud State shots on goal (eight overall).
UMD returns home next weekend for a pair of NSIC matches: first against Upper Iowa on Saturday and then Winona State on Sunday. Each match is set for a 1:00 p.m. opening kick.
