Also on Thursday will be an early NSIC match as the University of Mary travels to Minot State at 7 p.m. Action will continue through the weekend with non-conference play.

The Vikings start off the 2013 campaign with games on the road against Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association foes Northeastern State (Okla.) and Missouri Southern. Returning for Augustana are 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason players to watch Payton Pry and Liz Bunkers. Pry, a junior, led the team last year with nine points. Bunkers, a senior, starts on the defensive back line and is coming off a season in which she was the only Viking to play every minute of every game. Joining these two are Kara Bartels and Maren Werth. Bartels finished second on the team in points, and was named third team All-NSIC in 2012. Werth played several positions last season but still led the team in shots and received honorable mention All-NSIC honors last season.

The Bemidji State soccer team, which was slotted sixth in the 2013 NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, is coming off a 2012 campaign during which it posted a 10-7-2 overall record and a 8-5-2 mark in NSIC play to finish sixth in the final league standings. Stone and the Beavers earned a berth into the 2012 NSIC postseason, but were ousted in the first round my Upper Iowa University, 1-0.
The Beavers will be led by 2013 Preseason Player to Watch Mary O’Brien (Jr., F, Maplewood, Minn.). A Second-Team All-NSIC selection and Third-Team NSCAA/Continental Tire Women’s NCAA Division II All-Central Region pick, led the Beavers in scoring with 24 points in 2012. She established career-high totals for goals scored (10), which included two game-winning goals, and four assists, seeing time in all 19 of the Beavers’ games. She tied for fifth in the NSIC, netting 19 points (8g-3a) and tied for second in goals scored in league play with eight. In her first two seasons at Bemidji State, O’Brien has accumulated 31 points (13g-4a) and already ranks tenth on BSU’s career scoring list and is tied for eighth on the program’s all-time goals scoring list (13). O’Brien’s total of 10 goals as a sophomore equals Lindsey Natwick (2002-05) for eighth on the Beavers’ single-season goal scoring list.
The Beavers officially open the 2013 campaign Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. when they host Missouri Western State University for a nonconference affair. The match marks the first in the BSU-MWSU series, begins BSU’s 18-game regular-season schedule and is slated to be the first soccer game ever played at BSU’s Chet Anderson Stadium, which is currently undergoing a surface renovation to install field turf.

Concordia-St. Paul opens their season the road for a pair of games this weekend in Pueblo, Colorado against UC-Colorado Springs on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and CSU-Pueblo on Sunday at 11 a.m. This will be the first ever meeting with both schools for the Golden Bears.
Concordia is coming off an 8-9-1 (7-7-1, NSIC) season in which they finished ninth in the league.
Concordia returns seniors Chloe Moore, who scored seven goals and assisted on four more, and Kay Smith as well as sophomores Rachel Gratz and Sarah Pieper to anchor the defensive side. Moore will be counted on again to contribute offensively after being named NSIC All-Conference Honorable Mention. Smith brings veteran leadership after finding a home as an outside defender last season while Gratz and Pieper are talented young players who bring strength, physicality and speed in the back.
Jess Bianchi finished last season with five goals and four assists in her freshman year and is a rock in the midfield for the Golden Bears. She has a new running mate in forward Taryn MacMillan. MacMillan spent last season playing for the University of North Dakota before transferring to Concordia this year. She started all but one match as a freshman and tied for the team lead with three goals and eight points. She has already formed a solid connection with Moore and Bianchi and will be looked at to provide an offensive spark for CU, alongside senior Brittany Kapala.
Goalkeepers Emma Gartner and Kayla Kuczaboski are back this year and will continue to battle for playing time. Freshman Kate Mallory is also in the mix in goal.

U-Mary women’s soccer kicks off the season on Thursday at Minot State for a rematch of last seasons opening round playoff game. An experienced corps of players including 16 letterwinners and nine starters are looking to avenge a 2-1 loss to the Beavers that ended their 2012 season. Among those nine returning starters are U-Mary’s NSIC Players to Watch, senior forward Alex Bachman-Williams and sophomore defender Emily Christensen. A three-year starter, Bachman-Williams has been named all-region the past two seasons. A starter since walking onto campus last season, Christensen played a key role in the late season resurgence by the Marauders defense in 2012. U-Mary allowed just five goals during a six-game winning streak to end the regular season. In addition to their veteran experience, U-Mary has added an abundance of talent with the addition of 10 freshman and one junior college transfer.

Minnesota Crookston opens the 2013 season when they travel to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for a pair of non-conference matches. The Golden Eagles face Michigan Tech University (MTU) on Thursday, September 5 at 6 p.m. (CST) and Northern Michigan University (NMU) on Saturday, September 7 at 11 a.m. (CST). UMC finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 2-15-1 and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) record of 2-12-1. Coach Joe Alianiello enters his second season with 24 players in fall camp. Top returning players include Rachel Halligan (Sr, M, Duluth, Minn.) who scored three goals with two assists for eight points. Elizabeth Busch (So, M, Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored two goals and added an assist for five points while Courtney Armborst (So, F, West St. Paul, Minn.) added one goal and two assists for four points. Ashleigh Erdmann (Jr, GK, Crookston, Minn.) and Drew Underdahl (Jr, GK, Zumbro Falls, Minn.) split time in net last season. Erdmann recorded a 1.49 goals against average and a .797 saves percentage while Underdahl recorded a 2.82 goals against average and a .654 saves percentage.

The Bulldogs return eight starters from a 2012 team that finished 8-7-3 including top scorers Dani Potter (Sr./F) and Maureen Stormont (Jr./F). After closing out the 2012 regular season with a five-match winning streak to sneak into the playoffs, the Bulldogs find themselves tabbed as one of the top five teams in the conference. UMD opens its season at home this Thursday against non-conference foe Northern Michigan, a team against whom the Bulldogs are 11-3-3 all-time. Cane returns an impressive junior class that includes six starters and four of the team’s top five scorers from 2012.
Three sophomore returners saw significant time in 2012, including goalkeeper Marissa Rosa who posted a 7-4-2 overall record thanks to a 1.66 GAA and 48 saves. She also earned three shutouts on the year. Additionally, the Bulldogs add nine freshmen in a class that includes five forwards, three midfielders, and a goalkeeper. After finishing 2012 as strong, UMD will rely on an improving defense and a strong returning offense should lead them on the path to success this season.

Minnesota State kicks off the 2013 campaign this weekend as it hosts Truman State Friday at 4 p.m., before battling Central Missouri Sunday at 12 p.m. The Mavericks owned a 0-1-1 record against these two programs a year ago, including a 5-4 shootout victory over UCM in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. After graduating nine seniors and six starters from the 2012 squad, MSU returns five starters, including All-Central Region selections senior Tori Meinhardt and junior Molly McGough. The 2013 team welcomes 13 newcomers and will also be led by first-year head coach Brian Bahl, who joins the Mavericks after guiding the Upper Iowa men’s and women’s programs for the past six seasons. MSU went 2-1 in exhibition play posting victories over Macalester and Washburn and was led on offense by sophomore Korey Kronforst, who netted a team-high three preseason goals.

The Dragons open the season Thursday at the University of Jamestown and make their home debut Sunday against Missouri Western. The Dragons, entering their 15th season under the direction of Head Coach Rollie Bulock, return 13 letterwinners from last year’s team that went 4-12-2 overall and 3-10-2 in the NSIC. The top returner is junior Erin Nyberg, who was All-NSIC third team a year ago after leading the team in goals (seven) and points (16) a year ago.

Expectations are high at Minot State University as the women’s soccer team looks to capitalize on the momentum of its first ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Division II national tournament. MISU is led by Jason Spain, who is in his fourth season as the Beavers head coach and boasts a 35-19-6 overall record. The Beavers return 16 players who saw action last year, including impact player #10 Zoe Fisher (F, 5-6, Jr., Cambridgeshire, England / St. Ivo School / Kingston College). Fisher, who led the Northern Sun in points (31), shots (94) and goals (11), was named the NSIC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and was an All-NSIC and All-Central Region selection in 2012. The Beavers defense, which allowed just 15 goals 2012, will be anchored by versitile defender #14 Taylor Carlstrom (M, 5-6, Sr., Portland, Ore. / Central Catholic High School).

Northern State begins the 2013 campaign with a road trip weekend to take on the Ichabods of Washburn University and the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State. This is the first time the Wolves will take on either opponent in intercollegiate play. NSU is coming off a 3-12-3 season in 2012; however has a large amount of new blood with 11 freshmen and transfers on the 2013 squad. The squad hosts a total of 27 players from 15 states. Head Coach Steve Kehm is in his 15th season with the Wolves, bolstering a 150-100-34 record overall. Look out for hometown starter Hilary Peterson (D, 5-7, Sr., Aberdeen, S.D. / Aberdeen Central HS) as she wraps up her senior season with the Wolves. A key member of the defense throughout her career, Peterson has played in 53 games and accumulated 3 assists with more to come in 2013. Another in state product, Anna Bondy (MF, 5-10, Fr, Pierre, S.D. / T.F. Riggs HS), joins the Wolves with a lengthy list of honors prior to NSU including a couple 1st team All-State nods in 2011 and 2012. Watch out for her to make an impact as a midfielder.

The University of Sioux Falls women’s soccer team will open up the 2013 campaign with two matches on the road. The Cougars first match will take place on Friday, September 6 at the University of Nebraska Kearney. They will then head to Fort Hays, Kan. to take on the Tigers of Fort Hays State on Sunday, September 8th. The Cougars came away from their first season in the NSIC and NCAA with a 0-17-1 record. USF will be led by a group of five seniors in Natalie Blazier (M), Corrin Cook (GK), Melissa Daugherty (D), Maria Gonzalez (F), and Kayci Huslig (M). The Cougars will also rely on an infusion of new talent with ten of the nineteen players on the team making their debut for the Cougars this weekend.

The Mustangs are coming off a season in which they went 7-9-1 overall, 5-9-1 – their highest win total since the 2004 season and most under head coach TJ Buchholz but SMSU failed to make the NSIC tournament for the fifth straight season. Third year head coach TJ Buchholz looks to lead SMSU to its first postseason appearance since the 2007 as he welcomes 13 returning letterwinners, seven incoming freshmen and five transfer student-athletes.
SMSU returns its top four scorers from a season ago and will also welcome back one of its top offensive performers from 2011. Sophomore Miranda Cadena led the squad a season ago with 14 points and six goals, while sophomore Kendahl Fisher recorded 13 points with four goals and five assists. Senior Kayla Williams and junior Autumn Hayes also return after racking up three goals each.
Senior Vanesa Corona returns in 2013 after missing last season with an injury. In 2011, she scored three goals and racked up seven points, finishing second on the team.
The Mustangs will open the 2013 season on Sept. 6 at Fort Hays State (Kan.) and then face Nebraska-Kearney on Sept. 8. SMSU opens its home season on Sept. 13 with a non-conference game versus Lindenwood (Mo.).

The St. Cloud State University soccer team is set to get their 2013 campaign underway Thursday and Friday as they travel to Fayette, Iowa. The Huskies will take on Southwest Baptist University on Thursday and Maryville University on Friday with both games starting at 12:30 p.m. SCSU is returning 17 athletes from last years roster and welcoming nine newcomers to the team. Captains this year for the Huskies are goalkeeper Kenzie Hanzlik, center-mid Kara Dahmen, and defenseman Lauren Newbauer. In the Huskies 2012 campaign they compiled a 9-8-2 overall and an 8-6-1 NSIC record, which was good for seventh place in the conference standings. Last season was the fifth consecutive year that the SCSU made it to the conference tournament under head coach Becky Heiberger-McCabe. The Huskies first home game of the 2013 season is slated for Friday, September 13 as they welcome Northwest Missouri State University to Husky Stadium for a 7 p.m. game time. The Huskies will kick off NSIC play in the comforts of Husky Stadium on Sunday, September 15 against Minnesota Duluth for a 1 p.m. start time.

The Peacocks will enter the 2013 regular season with a new face at the helm of the program. Brian Diaz takes the reigns at Upper Iowa after spending the past five seasons as the top assistant at the University of South Alabama - an NCAA Division I member of the Sun Belt Conference. With Diaz atop the program, the Peacocks have been solid in the preseason, both defensively and offensively. UIU improved its preseason record to 2-1 last Thursday night with a 8-0 victory over Coe College in Fayette. Led by transfer Aimee Wronski (F, 5-6, Jr. Huntley, Ill.) – who joins teammate and sister Corinne Wronski (F, 5-3, R-Jr., Huntley, Ill.) – the UIU offense has been firing on all cylinders. Aimee Wronski netted two goals against Coe and bumped her total to three scores this preseason. Kali Loescher (F, 5-7, Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill.), a 2012 All-NSIC Honorable Mention, has also performed well in the three exhibition games netting two goals and earning a team-high four assists.
On defense, the Peacocks return 2012 NSCAA All-Region Defender and 2012 All-NSIC Third Team performer Kelsey Taldone (D, 5-3, Sr. Crystal Lake, Ill.), as well as 2013 NSIC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and 2012 All-NSIC First Team Goalkeeper Amanda Smith (GK, 5-9, Sr., Moline, Ill.). Smith has already recorded two shutouts this preseason and is primed for a big year in the NSIC. Last season, the UIU defense finished the season with a .903 save percentage – tops among all 234 NCAA Division II programs. The team also posted the most shutouts in the NSIC during the 2012 season with 14. The Peacocks will now look forward to their regular-season opener on Sept. 5 and 6 as they host Maryville and Southwest Baptist University as part of their annual Peacock Classic. Both games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Pattison field in Fayette.

Wayne State will face a pair of MIAA teams to open the 2013 season this week. The Wildcats travel Thursday to Maryville, Missouri and matchup against Northwest Missouri State in a 3 p.m. contest followed by a Sunday home encounter against Washburn University starting at 2 p.m. The Wildcats were 3-14-1 last season and return eight starters for new head coach Tom Cliff. Senior defender Macy Hagen and junior forward McKenna Adams are listed as Wildcat Players to Watch this season. Hagen, from Bellevue East HS, has started all but one match in her three years at WSC, and anchored the Wildcat defense last season while Adams, a junior forward from Springfield, Missouri, was a Third Team All-NSIC selection one year ago after leading the Wildcats in scoring with 18 points on seven goals and four assists.

The Winona State soccer team returns the major cogs of a team that went 16-5 last season and advanced to the championship game of the NSIC Tournament. WSU will open its season Friday at 7 pm against Central Missouri and will take on Truman at 12 pm Sunday. Ten of the 11 players who scored at least two goals last year are back, as are three defenders who earned all-region honors. Rebecca McCoy, Morgan LeFebvre and Kelsey Foss all earned all-region accolades last year and will be backed up by goalkeeper Alexandra Vial. Mehan Bolton and Caitlin Lilly return after leading the Warriors with five goals each as freshmen.
