WINONA, Minn. -- The Winona State soccer team opened its season with a defensive battle against Central Missouri, with the teams ending the double overtime contest still locked in a scoreless tie.

Neither team had many clean chances to score, with defense setting the tone from the beginning.
Alexandra Vial was able to make eight saves in goal for the Warriors while UCM goalkeeper Morgan Hartzler made three.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening half, with both defenses putting forward solid showings. The Warriors were able to put three shots on goal during the first 45 minutes, with Central Missouri collecting two.
The second half featured much of the same, with Central Missouri taking 12 shots but only putting four on target. Both teams had a shot on goal in each overtime, but were not able to capitalize.
Winona State had a few chances offensively, with the team taking nine corner kicks compared to Central Missouri's three.
The Warriors will return to action on Sept. 8 at 12 pm when they take on Truman State.
