BEMIDJI, Minn. –
Taylor Cameron got to the basket and hit a layup with 15 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the Winona State men's basketball team to an 87-86 win over Bemidji State Friday in Bemidji.
Trailing by one, Cameron drove to the hoop with the shot clock running down and missed, but was able to collect the rebound and found the back of the net on his second attempt for the game-winning field goal. Bemidji State had a final chance to win the game, but WSU held firm on defense to open 2014 with a NSIC road victory.
Freshman
Riley Bambenek led all scorers with 24 points, reaching the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season. Bambenek was 8-of-15 from the floor while making three shots from behind the 3-point line, including a big trey in overtime that tied the game at 83.
Neither team led by more than four during the final ten minutes of regulation. With the Warriors trailing by one, 76-75, in the final seconds of regulation, Cameron drew a foul and hit one of two free throws to send the contest into overtime. Cameron had an all-around fantastic showing, scoring ten points while grabbing six rebounds and handing out nine assists.
Fellow senior
Kellen Taylor also played a strong game, scoring 16 points while grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds. Taylor added six assists and four steals to help the Warrior cause. His 16 points and 16 rebounds provided Taylor his third double-double of the season.
Five players finished the game in double figures scoring for Winona State, with
Kyle Bauman adding 13 points and eight rebounds while
Mark Blacklock scored 12.
Winona State shot 50 percent (28-of-56) on the game, the fifth time in its last eight contests that the team has shot 50 percent or better from the floor.
The Warriors are now 12-2 overall and have a NSIC-leading 7-0 mark in conference games. Winona State will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Minnesota Crookston for a 6 pm contest.
