The NSIC crowned two National Champions while 15 athletes claimed All-American honors in 18 different events.  Four relay teams also came away with All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championship held in Winston-Salem, N.C.

NCAA National Champion - Women's Mile
Minnesota Duluth’s freshman Samantha Rivard (Oak Grove, Minn. / St. Francis HS) captured the mile title at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championship Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C. and did so in 4:50.3, shaving 4.36 seconds off the previous UMD mark which she set earlier this winter. In the process, Rivard became the Bulldogs’ second NCAA II indoor track champion, joining high jumper Jodi Swenson (1991) and third overall national titleholder UMD has ever produced (Lexi Williams won the outdoor 800-meter crown in 2012). Just a couple of hours after becoming part of UMD history, Rivard attained All-American status in another event by taking third in the 3,000-meter run. She finished in 9:44.98

National Champion Women’s Pole Vault
Sioux Falls’ Brigitte Gross (PV, Sr., Alexandria, S.D./Hanson HS) brought home the title in the Pole Vault with her winning vault of 12-11.5 (3.95m).  The men’s squad of Henrik Hansson, Skyler Kuil, Aduo Omot, and Harald Karbo earned an automatic qualifying mark to place themselves in the 12-team field. The Vikings ran to sixth place for their third All-American finish in four years.
The women’s team of Emma Anderson, Carina Hofmeister, Kayla Mescher, and Kyle Blakeslee kept their All-American finish streak alive, taking sixth in the 13-squad field.

University of Mary
Women’s Track: Saving its best performance of the season for the biggest stage, the University of Mary women’s 4x400 relay team placed third at the 2014 NCAA women’s indoor  track and field championships. Juniors Kathryn Stewart and Crystal Hovland, both of whom ran on the Marauders national championship Distance Medley Relay team a year ago, were joined by two Canadian freshmen, Melanie Rodriguez and Cassie Jones. The quartet ran a school-record time of 3:47.24 to finish second in their heat and third overall. U-Mary was just .11 seconds out of second... Stewart and Janet Johnson also competed individually and both missed the finals by the slimmest of margins. Stewart finished ninth in the 200 meter dash, missing the finals and All-American honors by .1 seconds. Johnson placed ninth and missed the finals and All-American honors by .002 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles... U-Mary finished with six team points and placed 32nd overall.

Minnesota Duluth
Men Track: Bulldog senior Cole Toepfer finished 14th in the mile prelimaries with a time of 4:18.94 and failed to advance to Saturday’s finals. Their time of 10:07.30 was just 3.09 seconds shy of an All-American performance (eighth place).
Women Track/Field:  Kayla Wiltrout came in as an NCAA II Indoor Track and Field Championship newcomer and left as an NCAA II All-American.
